Stairs at the Eiffel Tower

Our inclination is to walk up the stairs to the second floor of the Eiffel Tower, but my wife and daughter have some height issues and would find if difficult to do so if the stairs are such that they are not solid and the metal grate type where you can see through them to the ground. Can anyone comment on this? What are the stairs like?

Thank you!

I walked to the second level about 7 years ago, the stairs are solid but there are a lot of them, they better be in good shape!

Yes the stairs are solid, but you can see down to the ground -- and the 2nd level is pretty high up! I walked down from the 2nd level. I have some issues with heights, and I found that I had to just focus on the stairs and not look around. I can't say it was enjoyable. I agree you have to be in very good shape to walk up.

I have done it twice. Once wuth my then 13 yr old, he had no problem and ran ahead of me, once with my husband, who is not athelitic, he made it up fine, you can go slowly as people can pass you if they wish.

I have some issues with height, and i was ok, going up is much easier than going down, dont do that, ( you are allowed to take elevator down) .

You can see out around you, the stairs are completely enclosed and feel solid, but, the " walls" are wire fence like material so you can see out, but its not as bad as it sounds, really..just dont go down. Harder on knees and you have to look down when going down, when going up its esaider to just look up.

If you google you can find actual photos of the stairs, try that.
