St Remy for 6 nights April ‘24, day trip advice please

Bonjour,

We are spending 3 nights in Lyon, then picking up car in Avignon and driving to St Remy for 6 nights April 12-18.
We are 70’s, good physical shape, enjoy a slower pace, and want to absorb the beauty of Provence.
So far we want to visit:

Arles, Les Baux

Uzes, Pont du Gard, Nimes

Roussion, Gordes, maybe L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue

Your additional village and restaurant suggestions are most appreciated.
We don’t want to spend too much time driving, we would rather explore, eat and drink!

Merci,
Phil & Casey

I leave Tuesday March 27 for a month in Provence. S, F, 70+ and only use public transpo. Going to all the towns you listed as well as Orange, Carpentras, Cavaillon, Menerbes (Peter Mayle's A Year in Provence setting), Forcalquier, Manosque, Aubagne, Brignoles, St Maxime-St Baume, Pertuis, Ansouis, Saintes Marie de la Mar. All are a focus of various youtube videos of either individually or best towns in Provence, loveliest towns of Provence, quaintest, highest, most authentic, etc, etc, etc, you get the idea.

We spent a month near St Remy in summer 2022. Highlights were Les Baux (besides the castle there is the lovely church and small museum of Yves Brayer), St Paul asylum (where Van Gogh lived, there is small parking there or big parking across the road or you can walk from St Remy, the walk is signposted with his paintings), Glanum (ruins of a Roman city, next to St Paul), small museum in St Remy with the artifacts from Glanum, Nimes (we did the Roman museum and the Pont du Gard in same day, crowds were actually very light at 5 pm at PDG), of all the hill towns we preferred Bonnieux over Gordes. Also near St Remy I recommend the winery of Mas De la Dame and the olive oil of Castelas.

There are many more great tips in the blog and books of Keith Van Sickle (including his St Remy parking "secret" if you follow his directions you will find it) https://keithvansickle.com/

Finally the smaller towns around St Remy have weekend festivals from time to time. We stayed in Maussane les Alpilles which has a good tourist information website. But we saw signs for other towns other festivals too.

Enjoy the planning!

All the above suggestions plus Avignon will keep you busy. Travel times are slow, the villages are charming, and the hours will slip by. And if you finish touring early there is always some rosé to be sampled back in St Remy.
