St-Remy-de-Provence: Recommended day trips with a car

We will be visiting France in May 2023. As part of a road trip, we are thinking of stopping for one or two nights in St-Remy.

Just wondering which day trips you would recommend from there?

Is there enough to do for 3 days in the area?

We LOVED St. Remy…….and we had a car……touring the hospital and gardens where Van Gogh lived was so interesting…….we also took a day to drive to Menerbes, Loumarin and Rousillon……..loved driving to these lovely little villages and taking our time walking through them…….there is a wonderful town market every Wednesday in St. Remy that is well worth seeing….also there is a lovely old estate on the outskirts of St. Remy that a mom and 2 daughters have turned into a B&B…….we did not stay there but we enjoyed a wonderful lunch on their grounds and they kindly allowed us to take our books and sit by their pool and read the next afternoon……don’t miss it…….tree-lined drive as you enter their grounds and a feeling that you are going back in time…….Chateau Des Alpilles……We used Gordes and St. Remy as our bases in the south of France…….

In addition to the other suggestions listed above, other suggestions are Les Baux, Carrieres des Lumieres near Les Baux and the Roman ruins of Glanum in St. Remy.

There is enough to do for weeks in that area! Is Saint-Remy-de-Provence your only planned stop in the region? If so, and if you can swing it, you won't regret a 3-night stay (or longer, but I don't want to push the boat).

We LOVED St Rémy too. The longer you can stay, the better. We stayed at Hotel du Soleil and loved it as well.

Our day trips were:
Carcassone (do not miss!)
Roussillon (loved it)
Arles
Avignon
Gordes
Chateauneuf-du-Pape
Isle-sur-la-Sorgue

But also budget one day for St Rémy, it’s well worth it. We did not visit the hospital where Van Gogh stayed, did not interest us.

You will soon find out you could keep busy and happy for weeks on end in this location. Pont du Gard is about 45 minutes from SRDP. It's incredible. You can hook up with boat rental shop and canoe down the tributary it sits on and picnic along the banks with the spectacular man made marvel as your backdrop. in addition to the other great suggestions Gordes, Rousillion, Uzes (great market day on Saturday), Arles are all easy day trips (under an hour or so) for your hub. Great hiking and biking in the area as well. Pick up 'Markets of Provence' from amazon. St Remy is a great town in its own right. Enjoy the planning and the trip.

You are spoiled for choice for things to do, and driving through the countryside is pretty easy. If you like Roman history/ruins then Pont du Garde and the Roman Theatre in Orange are unique highlights. Les Baeux, the town, was crowded and touristy but the ruins and views of the countryside are worth it.

Avoid Avignon. The Papal Palace and the bridge are expensive non-sights, and you’ll find more character in other towns.
