Greetings -
About eight years ago my brother visited the Van Gogh asylum near St. Remy. He purchased a painting by a patient at the asylum (forgive me if I'm not getting the nomenclature right) at a shop/gallery on the grounds. The details are obviously a bit hazy now, but I'm wondering if anyone has any information about such a place. We are in the area this week and would love to visit but have not been able to find any information online. Many thanks, as always, in advance.
Three years ago, while staying at the south end of Saint-Remy, I walked 15 minutes south of town along the road (watch for traffic!) to the asylum/monastery site. I spent as much time out back, in the garden area, contemplating the place, as I did inside, stepping in to one of the rooms which might or might not have been Van Gogh’s room. I believe there was a souvenir shop, but I didn’t purchase anything, and if there was a gallery or if they sold anyone else’s art at the shop, I totally missed it.
Saint-Paul de Mausole is the asylum outside of St-Remy where Vincent Van Gogh was hospitalized and created many of his paintings.
It's location will be described in any good guidebook of the area. You can stand in his cell/room and look through the bars at the view he had of the outer fence and the trees and mountains in the background.
According to the Saint Paul de Mausole Monastery website, the patients’ artwork is exhibited adjacent to the gift shop where you can make purchases.
Barbara- I didn’t venture enough to find the patients’ exhibition, but that’s good to know. The site has a staged room with a bed and chair to suggest how Vincent’s room would have been outfitted, but it was clear that no one today knows for sure if it was the room he actually occupied, or if that was another room in the place.
Thanks all! We look forward to visiting.
Several years ago we visited the St. Paul Asylum and I remember the patient's art exhibited and for sale. We followed the posted signs and photo boards of Van Gogh's painting locations from there into St. Remy.
We visited today and despite 102 degree heat, it was a highlight of our three-week trip. Aside from Van Gogh, the monastery turned asylum is a beautiful place. The gift shop sells mostly Van Gogh-themed gifts, but there are paintings done by patients - all of which are for sale in the 100-200 Euro range.
