St Remy

I will be traveling to France and for part of the tip I will be spending 6 days in St Remy and then 2 nights in Aix.

I did a lot of research from various sources, including this Forum. I created an itinerary for my self and then asked ChatGPT for several versions of the itinerary. Generally I don’t want to drive more than an hour from St Remy. I will be traveling in Sept
Any comments or suggestions?

Day 4 is going to be a very long day. I spent a couple of days in Moustiers and enjoyed the time there but I wouldn't recommend it as a day trip from St. Remy. It's a beautiful area and nice little village but the most enjoyable part of our trip there was renting one of the little electric boats and going up the water into the gorge. An hour rental was perfect for that. It wouldn't be worth the long drive there and back, in my opinion.
Perhaps a drive to the Med and enjoying that scenery would be a good substitute.

Thank you for your reply. The long day is my biggest concern. I’ll be in Nice and Marseille so I I already have plans along the Med. I will see how I feel….a day of rest may be needed. Thanks again

I agree that Day 4 will be difficult. Your other days from St-Remy de Provence look fine and similar to what we did with a 6 night stay there. We drove via Lourmarin, spent a night in Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and saw the gorge on our way to Nice. Loved Moustiers and the Gorge du Verdon.

Depending when you plan to go, keep in mind that parking can be difficult in Roussillon and Gordes. We went to Roussillon first thing in the morning so parking was ok. But finding a restaurant with seating was impossible. In Gordes, we looked for parking for an hour, and finally gave up. So try to avoid weekends or any holiday in France during peak season.

Thank you. Maybe I will spend the night and drive back the following day. I’d love to go there and don’t know when I will be back

Be sure you're leaving time to check out St Remy itself. I know you'll be there during the evenings but as small as it is be sure to spend some time exploring. If you are waking up on market day get out early and enjoy the market itself and the energy of it. By 11:00 or so people have come in from out of town and it gets really crowded.

Careful not to park in Place de la République the night before market day. You will be towed. Parking de la Libération is a huge sprawling free parking lot but entrance is small and easy to miss because it doesn't look like much. And on the one way ring road if you miss it you get to loop the town again.

Day 1 could be long depending on how much time you spend at the market and whether you do the Carrieres de Lumiere as well. The Les Baux site is huge and could easily take hours to explore if you're interested. I'd suggest you buy provisions at the market and eat a picnic lunch at the Les Baux site. There are scattered tables inside the site that make good lunch spots - some with great views.

I also notice you don't mention either the van Gogh asylum or Glanum in your itinerary. If you're not interested in van Gogh that's understandable but Glanum is worth a stop if you're at all interested in ruins as it is Gallo/Greek/Roman and has a really interesting history.

Anthony Bourdain's Provence segment is centered in St Remy and has his usual mix of local culture and food that I find fascinating.
Careful with the Richard.

Have a great trip,

Van Gogh is definitely included in our plans. We will be sure to go to the Saint Remy early. Luckily we will be able to walk there. (We’ve learned about having to skip towns when in Tuscany.)

Th Hank you for your advice.

The walk to Van Gogh's asylum is doable and you'll see a lot people doing it but is kind of long and hot in the summer. It is the same road out of town that leads to Les Baux so you can drive out, park there (or the nearby Glanum paid parking if it's full) and then continue on to Les Baux if that fits in with your plans.

Enjoy your Richard... or maybe a Suze if that's more your speed,
