St. Malo, Dinard and Dinan

Hello!
Even though it was not in our original plans, my husband has decided that he would like to visit St. Malo. We will be coming from Bayeux by train.
My question is: Should we stay in ST. Malo for 3 days as a "home base" and take each day to visit St. Malo, Dinard and Dinan consecutively or should we stay in Dinard and visit the other two cities? Also, what is the best way to travel from one place to the other?
Keep in mind that we would be relaying on public transport. I read something about a ferry going from some of these towns so that would be an exciting possibility as well. At the end of this trip we will be returning to Paris by train.

Thanks a million,
Elvy

I've stesyed in Dinan and found it to be a good base for exploring Brittany. You have more than enough time to visit these cities, which are relatively small, as well as going deeper into Brittany via day trips. Are you going to Mt. St. Michele?

Bus connections around the region seem pretty equivalent whether you stay inland at Dinan or on the coast at St. Malo; don't expect buses to run on Sundays. From St. Malo to Paris, there are 4 direct TGV trains per day (3.25 hours). From Dinan to Paris, Rick's France book recommends start with a bus to Dol de Bretagne, then TGV from there to Paris (some of the same trains that departed St. Malo).

Thanks for all the information
We will not be going to the Mt. St Michel since we have already been there.

We stayed in Dinard for three nights. I'd note that (despite its massive English second-home and visitor base) this is a very seasonal location. It's a bit sleepy, and cool, out-of-season. Some restaurants are open fewer days, or not at all. You didn't mention your month of travel.

St. Malo is impressive, but seemed too touristy to me. It's a unique piece of city architecture, but at eye-level, maybe not that different from other walled medieval cites with modern additions. In other words, it may not be necessary to sleep here. To contrast, while Dinan is also well-touristed, it's not as wall-to-wall restaurants and strolling crowds as St. Malo - maybe (?) because St. Malo is walled, almost all "old", has a ferry, and is smaller than Greater Dinan. BTW, as Rick says about the Tour Maubourg and the Eiffel Tower, you can see St. Malo from Dinard. You can't see St. Malo from St. Malo!

Depending of traffic and weather, both St. M and Dinard on well out on peninsulas. This is a traffic choke point, and a driving delay for each day's daytrips. In that sense, Dinan may be better for making the most of each day. But all three of them have their attractivenesses in good weather.

Thank you all for your information. I think that we will stay in Dinan and visit the other two places on a day trip.
