Spring Jacket

I will be in Paris and Erquy (Brittany) this spring. What travel jacket might I consider purchasing? Which jackets serve the traveler the best for that season?

I travel with a waterproof jacket with a hood for every vacation. Depending on how early this spring you are going, you might need an insulating layer. I'm going in early April. I'm taking my waterproof jacket and a puffy vest in case it's cold. I'll have several layers of long sleeve shirts if needed but I run hot so will likely not need a lot of cold weather stuff. YMMV.

You didn't ask but I'll also take smartwool glove liners. I've used them before in April, May and June in the Netherlands, Belgium, France and UK.

I was in shirt sleeves today. Almost 70°F.

Unless you're planning on spending a lot of time outdoors just a light windproof jacket will suffice.

I live a bit east of there in western Normandy near the channel.

Definitely I would recommend something lightweight and water resistant. In addition, perhaps pick up an inexpensive and easily packed collapsable umbrella at Monoprix or a local hypermarché.

I also (personal preference) would recommend having a lightweight vest, such as a thinner Polartec fleece one. You get some added, zippered pockets, and the vest can keep you more comfortable when the weather changes from the unseasonably warm conditions we're having today to the unseasonably cool ones we're practically guaranteed to have in the next week or so.

I wouldn't bother with gloves (I don't even wear them in the dead of winter) unless your hands are prone to feeling uncomfortably cold. They're just yet another thing to misplace.

I like a fleece-jacket layer and a hooded, waterproof jacket/windbreaker to wear on top. Sometimes I only need one of them. It would be a pretty rare spring day in Brittany when I wouldn't need at least one of those layers at some point during the day. You'll only have the high temperature, whatever it is, for a few hours.

I never travel anywhere at any time of year, even the desert, without a rain jacket. Everything else is just layers. And I find a hoodie to be a versatile layer.

If you are someplace that needs a water-repellant jacket, you should also want rain-resistant footwear. And hat, although buying one there will leave you with a nice souvenir.
