Southern France in December

Tentatively planning 5-6 adults traveling in late December/over Christmas. As part of our trip, we are looking at 3-5 nights in Southern France, likely spending time in Collioure and/or Carcassonne.
Weatherwise, historically it looks like we should expect Fahrenheit 50's/highs and 40's/lows, with 'some' rain in . We are prepared for this--although hoping that rain does not monopolize the week. Have you traveled to these areas in December? Am I crazy for planning December travels to these areas?
Thanks for your input.

Hi,
Depsite the relatively mild weather, Collioure will be dead in December. I would not recommend it.
Carcassonne would be better, but where else do you plan to go?

I would research very carefully, not just weather, but holiday closures, before purchasing plane tickets. I was an exchange teacher in London for a year; and we looked at a number of possibilities for the long winter break. Sunshine and mild temps were one important goal, London being not too different from Oregon. The best place for reliably nice weather turned out to be Sicily. Because it attracts lots of visitors from the frozen north of Europe during that time, lots of attractions and restaurants stay open. Wherever you go, be sure to figure out, in advance, where you will eat your holiday meals; and get reservations.

The only place in Europe for “guaranteed” good weather at that time of year is the Canary Islands.

With most of mainland Europe, you run the risk of lots of rain, but as this year has shown so far, there is little “average” about the weather these days.

Thanks Jennifer. Traveling during December we expect 'wintery' weather. After reviewing the historical weather patterns, I was wondering if recent travelers notices differences. Agree--there is nothing normal or average about weather these days. So...we'll evaluate if we are up for the risk. Otherwise, we may just spend all of our time in Barcelona - Catalonia area. Thank you so much for your response.
