Souther France Road Trip

We are planning a road trip for Some therm France in May for about 15 days. We will spend t nights in Nice and the pick up our rental car. We want to do a round trip ending up in Nice hitting wine country and then the French Riviera. Any suggested towns to stop in on our journey?

I'd like some clarification. You want to go to wine country. Which wine country? You can go to Cahors if you like Malbecs or do you want to go to Bordeaux & St. Emilon? There's wine country around Lyon too. What are your interests? Do you like some outdoor museums? FYI the Le Mans is in Nice in May. Will your trip coincide with that event?

Yes to all of that! I think the Bordeaux region makes the most sense although I’ve always wanted to find a really good Malbec. Yes we want to explore museums and shops in quaint villages. I looked up LeMans and it says it’s in June. We plan on heading back to Paris from Nice by train on the 18th of May or so.

The Rick Steves guidebooks will provide you with complete information for the area. Consider a loop including Aix, Arles, Avignon, Gordes, Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, St Remy, Baux, Vaison-la-Romaine, Antibes, St Tropez, Marseilles--edited to your interests. There is plenty to fill your 15 days without going as far as Bordeaux. The wines of Provence are more than satisfactory, particularly rosé. It is a delightful area.

The Le Man's race is in Le Mans, nowhere near any place that has been mentioned. The race near Nice is in Monaco.

Schteffi has mentioned areas with vineyards and interesting wines. They just aren't as well known in the US. The two well-known regions are Burgundy and Bordeaux, neither anywhere near Nice. However, you will be near Bandol and the southern Rhône wine region, such as Châteauneuf du Pape among others. Enjoy.
