South of France in September and October

We are planning to stay 2 months in the South of France, Provence, Nice.

We were thinking of doing a month in each location and renting an apartment.

Any suggestions about where to stay first and how to break up the trip?

I think it depends on if you want to enjoy the sea. September weather tends to be much better than October (especially the 2nd half of October).

Things do slow down quite a bit in western Provence in October, while September can still be a bit busy in both locations.

You won't need a car in Nice (except for short day trips to the hinterlands or weekends in Italy) and apartments with parking will generally be tougher to find. But to enjoy Western Provence, you will need to rent a car. If you decide to pursue a two month rental, look at the extended lease programs for short term stays.

In Provence I would suggest looking onto Arles and Vaison-la-Romaine if you're looking for a community. They would be my picks for a month. But more information would be helpful as to what you want a location to provide.
