We are looking at doing a trip up from barcelona all the way along the southern Mediterranean coast of france into italy. Wondering if anyone has experience with this trip and what the highlights for them were.
We did it last year, but in the opposite direction. Highlights for us were the areas around Arles (Camargue, Pont du Gard included). The only real deviation we took was going through the lavender fields (although I could quite easily have skipped that) and driving down the Var gorge via Entrevaux.
There's a train line from Nice through Entrevaux and on to Digne-les-Bains. The train seems priced more for tourists, but it's a nice day out. Departures aren't terribly frequent, so you need to look hard at the schedule to figure out how you can have some time at both Entrevaux and Digne.
Are you interested in countryside alone or also in cities?
