I signed into CaptainTrain this AM to find a warning about a 24-hour strike from 19:00 May 31. Seems a nice easy place to check for problems if you are in France (as I am) now. Lucky for us we are not moving about by train on the 31st/1st.
Thanks for the reminder, Laurel. I hadn't thought of using captaintrain.com for updates even though that's how I purchased all our tickets for our May trip. I used cestlagreve.com instead but I think captaintrain would have been easier or clearer. The only connection we didn't take was Marseille to Aix and we didn't even wait to find out if it would be running, we just took a taxi instead and considered the cost part of the vacation. I was concerned about our Aix to Paris TGV so reserved a car the week before but as it turned out we didn't have any problems because the strike for the 19 May didn't begin until 19:00.
Yes, there was a strike today and It hit my train. Oh well, an extra day in rainy Paris. A first world problem.
If you follow this link
http://www.sncf.com/fr/presse/communiques-ressources
and go to
"PRÉVISIONS DE TRAFIC POUR LE 1ER JUIN 2016" (Traffic forecasts for June 1)
you can see the overall state of what trains will be running or not tomorrow. (It's in French but also very number- and graphic- heavy, so very visual and thus hopefully can be understood even by non-French speakers if you look up the words online).
Of course you can always check your own train (by #) by checking at this link:
http://www.sncf.com/fr/horaires-info-trafic
A few French words/phrases are needed to follow any of this (or try Google translate, or have a dictionary to hand).
I think he was referring to himself having to spend a day in Paris, Mrs. EB. Doucement.
BTW, the action is a 50% reduction, not a complete shut down but it will continue for the time being.
Today's train on SNCF left as planned but a tad late. The irony is I bought my May 31 ticket assuming today's would be cancelled. Blew up in my face.
Some trains are running 5 out of 10 trips, others 3 out of 10 and so forth...
You really need to check your particular train, using the sites mentioned.
If you miss your train due to the strike, you can use your original ticket and board the next one or the one following.
You might not be guaranteed a seat, though, since the person who booked a seat on this train gets preference.
