Is there any way to determine which way seats are facing? Prefer not to be stuck facing backwards for a 5-hour ride.

Nope, not really.
Unless the train is absolutely full there's no need to sit in your allocated seat.

Have you experienced riding backwards on a train? If not, I sometimes prefer it as I feel like I see more and outside doesn’t feel like it’s rushing by quite as fast so as to make me ill.
