Are there any more formal dining cars on the SNCF trains? I ate in them many times as a child travelling with my Mom. Now I would like my children to partake in this historical right of passage. Thanks in advance.

no. bring food.. only a crappy concession car.. and only on longer routes.. Bring a picnic. Days of those dining cars is gone .. even on the TGVs.. etc..
Or spend thousands and take the Orient Express.. lol

You have to stand up in the concession car at counters and the food is pretty bad in my opinion. Not much selection and almost all pre-packaged from what I have seen. Bring your own and get a seat with a table if you can.
