We will be taking a group tour from Paris to Normandy the first two weeks in May. At the end of the trip we would like to stay over for 3-4 days in a small town outside of Paris to get more of a feel for the countryside. Does anyone have recommendations for a picturesque area where we might find a good B and B as a center for driving around? We want to work Versailles into the trip, any suggestions for that area?

You might look for a place in the city of Versailles, which is a nice little town. I do not know of any B&B's there, but I am sure you can locate some on the internet. This would make your visit to Versailles chateau pretty easy.. But it is not in the countryside. Peter
Chartres is absolutely charming. The Cathedral and old town are stunning. Very close to Paris.
Fontainebleau has a royal palace that is much older and less overcrowded than Versailles, and some countryside around it that was deservedly popular with artists - look up "Barbizon School".
I second Fontainebleau! My cousin took me there on my first visit to Paris, when I was 21. It's nice to hear that it's still less overcrowded than Versailles.
