Small towns near Chartres?

We have 5 nights for a stopover (landing at Charles de Gaulle) in late September. I really want to see Chartres for the cathedral, hubby would love to find a small town to stay in nearby. Preferably medieval. :) Provins looks amazing but it's further than we want to be for a short stop with Chartres as the main attraction.

We may spend our first night in Paris, but will rent a car (saving our final night near to be near CDG for a morning flight) so 3 or 4 nights to enjoy a more leisurely stay in a place where we can wander around pretty streets, walk to a good boulangerie and enjoy a good (not necessarily fancy) meal. I understand that there's a lot of history in this Ile de France region. Your thoughts?

I've been to Paris for months at a time and was there last in November. With these trips have been to quite a few of the towns within a 1-1 1.2 hour radius of Chartres. Goggle Chartres, zoom in for names of towns and rome2rio.com to get a sense of travel time to get you into the city in a time frame you set. I also write the names of some of the towns, google or plug into youtube and see if here are any hits.

Chartres is a small town, and it has a lovely historical center besides the cathedral. Nearby alternatives are worse, in my opinion. You could try Montfort l'Amaury, but it is not that close. There is also Maintenon but there are, like, two cute streets and just one hotel.

EDIT: regarding places to stay in Chartres, I love the Grand Monarque hotel. There are many good alternatives, and there are plenty of nice restaurants in town, including Café Bleu and Moulin du Ponceau.

Chartres may be your best bet if you intend to spend a few days, but to me it's not a place to spend much time. I strongly recommend at least one overnight because of the fabulous illuminations around town, which will be going on in September. The one on the cathedral is the most fantastic of them all, but we loved just about every one. In fact we couldn't stay up late enough to see them all.

As for nice villages, the area around there isn't that attractive. I look for interesting villages and towns everywhere we go, and I have nothing on my radar in that area. But there are people who know the area better than I do who may have suggestions. The closest thing to a village we've visited is Illiers-Combray, which seemed shabby to me.

On the bright side, an hour away is La Ferte Bernard, a lovely small walkable town with good restaurants and one great restaurant (Du dauphin), a river running through channels, a church known for its elegant carved stone letters, a great tea room, nice shops. Saturday it has a scenic market in the neighborhood of Saint Antoine church. With a car you can drive to a lot of beautiful villages in the area, especially if you go to the Perche.

Belleme in the Perche is another small town I'd recommend.

I don't consider Chartres a small town. Population 39k to me isn't small, but then I live in a rural area so my perspective is skewed. If you take the train there it might seem small, but if you drive there you'll realize its size--170,000 in the metropolitan area.
