We will be there at the end of May and are based in Colmar. Will be visiting Ribbeauvile, Riquewihr, and maybe Eguisheim. Any other recommendations for interesting little towns in France - and an nearby one in Germany that we could visit? I've seen several posts recommending Gengenbach, but I don't see a lot to do / see there. Thank you!!!!
A larger town that has interesting things to see/do would be Freiburg im Breisgau. You can get there in 60-90 minutes by taking a cross-border bus to Breisach and then a train, probably faster by car.
I second Freiburg. I studied there in the 90's and it is beautiful.
I would cross the Rhine and take a short Rhine cruise. The stretch of the Rhine near where you are is full of castles and beautiful vineyards and on a nice day those short 2-3 hour cruises are really gorgeous.
"..."interesting little towns in France." I suggest Obernai just west of Strasbourg, or Bruyere (Alsace).
"...nearby one in Germany...." I suggest Rastatt, or Freiburg , which is a city.
Not a town, but Koenigsbourg Castle was fun to visit. While in Eguisheim, we found a fantastic meat/sausage stand while walking one of the narrow cobblestone lanes. It was a little shop basically based in his garage. If you stumble upon him, and he has anything with blueberries added, buy it! It was fantastic! Oh! I almost forgot the duck gizzard salad at Schwendi Bier & Winstub in Colmar was the best lunch of the trip!
