Sixt Rental Car Experience - Caen

We were in France in March 2019 and I wanted to make sure to share my rental experience with you all. I read many pieces of advice from this forum before traveling, and I want to make sure I pass along advice. Prior to traveling, I read negative things about Sixt but was swayed by the low price, which was a mistake.

We rented a car from Sixt in Caen. The car was located in a lot a few blocks from the office. The employee didn't go with us to find the car, just sent us on a hunt to locate it. After locating the car, I took pictures of it to document any damage.

When we returned the vehicle, the employee spent 15 minutes going over the car with a fine tooth comb. She pointed out two scrapes on two hubcaps. I pulled open my pictures from my phone and showed her that the damage was present at the time of rental. She then said - you are right - it's noted in the vehicle information but just wasn't on the diagram. She told her co-worker that the damages were there previously. I asked for a receipt stating that the damages were on the vehicle prior to us getting the vehicle, and THREE employees said we didn’t need one - and I was stupid and trusted them. I should have insisted on it, but we had a train to catch.

Upon return to the US, I had an email stating that the damages were being charged to us (over $500). I purchased the additional coverage through Expedia, but this is now a matter of principle. I emailed them the information with the images to which they replied that the images were time stamped 6:21PM (after we got the vehicle). Keep in mind that my computer has all of the items in Eastern Standard Time, not France time. They also stated that we should have gone to the employee to point out the damage - I have a feeling if we had done that, they would have said that we scraped the hubcaps before getting the employee.

So a huge lesson learned - do NOT rent from Sixt unless you purchase additional coverage and take pictures with the employee present. They are very dishonest.

This sounds like it is a franchisee problem, located in Caen. I have rented from Sixt several times in the US without problems, and twice in Europe without issue. Once at Geneva Airport and once at a franchisee in Bayreuth, Germany. Neither time did they even look at the car when I returned it. Yes, there are crooks in this business, and not just with Sixt.

When you get this settled. send this tale to Sixt headquarters in Germany. They may be interested in the acts carried out by franchisees who carry their name.

I've never experienced any problems with Sixt and I've rented from them many times over the years from various locations. I tend not to use them now as they inexplicably raised their prices to Avis level from their usual low prices a couple of years ago. As has been mentioned previously, this is a franchisee issue not a company one.

Odd my three rental experiences are completely the opposite. The employee barely glanced at the car upon returning it.

As for you issue I would be contacting the HQ NOW not later. And I would tell them what you told us and show the photos and the date stamp time. I would also see if you have a photo from something else that shows the time being obviously “off”

And die any of you photos show the car in its parking lot? It is hard to say the photos were taken after you rented the car if they show it in its starting lot.

I appreciate all of your input! I am trying to find the HQ email information but am not having much luck, even by visiting the Sixt Germany website. I will keep looking.

Thank you - that's the link I used earlier. I was hoping to try to find an email address for one of the higher ups, but no luck. Thanks for the Youtube link too.

Go to the website, click help, on the right (lower) you will see a button for an email contact form to fill out.

As others have pointed out, this probably is a location-specific thing. I've had so many different experiences at different rental offices for the same company.

I had a very similar experience at the Sixt agency at the Ljubljana train station last fall. I had booked with no required prepayment. As they were checking me in I mentioned that I didn’t want/need the extra insurance coverage as I would just use that provided by my credit card. Then they said I had indicated when I’d booked online that I DID want the insurance. The emails I had received as confirmation did not indicate that ... but it also didn’t say I’d refused it. I told them I didn’t want it and they said it was impossible to change/cancel. So I gave up (Sixt is only car rental available at the station) and paid for it (it had a 1000euro deductible), as I had a 2-hour drive and rain storms in forecast.
Like you no employee came with me, but I inspected closely and took lots of pics. Didn’t see any damage. Two weeks later when I turned car in the Sixt employee slowly circled car twice (finding nothing), and then walked straight to driver’s door, opened it, and pointed to 3 tiny scratches/scrapes on the side of door where it closes/abuts frame ... not visible unless door is open. I stated that I had not caused them and they undoubtedly were there when I picked car up. They ignored me and charged me almost $500.
I had bad sensation when they pulled the insurance scam on me upfront but as I was alone and wanting to get on road, I just accepted it (my only alternative was to have walked away and taken taxi or bus to airport in hopes of getting an affordable rental as a walkup at a different agency). I agree that Sixt is very dishonest.

I agree that Sixt is very dishonest.

You can't make a sweeping generailsation about a whole organisation. I and many others have had perfectly good experiences with Sixt, me peronally on more than ten occasions. It's akin to claiming the whole of Teco's is dishonest because I had a bad run in with one employee at a particular branch. Claiming a whole firm is dishonest puts off potential customers and is unfair on the company. By all means name and shame the particular location and report them to head office but don't slander the whole company on a public forum.

@JC - that's why I called out the specific Caen location - to let other travelers know what happened there. Had I listened to the other reviews for the location, I would have been smart and not rented through them. I'm sure many other locations are perfectly fine, but if you search the travel boards, this one has a reputation for being dishonest.

@JC You’re right ... I should have specified that I meant the employees at the Ljubljana Train station Sixt location are dishonest.

We rented a car through Sixt last September in Germany. All was fine until after we returned home and then got a notice that they charged us an additional 30.00 for a ticket fee. The notice said we would be receiving a ticket in the mail (for what we do not know). Well this is April and we still have not received a ticket. Was this just a scam to get more $$ out of us, or should we still expect to receive a ticket at this late date...8 months later?? Does it really take that long?

Not a scam. Happened to me too. A camera probably caught you violating a traffic law.

Karen: unfortunately, it is not a scam.

When you get a ticket for a rental car in Europe, the fees are in two installments. The first is the fee the rental car company charges to turn your information over to the authorities (and you agreed to this as part of your rental agreement). The second is the ticket itself, which can take many months (some reports say up to a year!) to be sent to you.
