Sitting outside at a basic French cafe or bakery

What is the proper way to grab a seat at an outdoor French cafe for a drink? Do you wait to be seated or just grab a seat and wait for a server? I'm referring to a typical work-a-day bar, not a fancy or high-priced place.

Also, similarly for bakeries that have outdoor sitting, do you purchase inside and then grab a table outside, or are there servers at bakeries, also?

A big thank you to responders with helpful knowledge. - Steve

This was just asked and answered in this thread...

For bakeries, if there are servers, you do not take a table unless you’re ordering from the server.

And the price is higher at the table than take away at the counter.

Yes, if it's just some outside tables for convenience but no servers, help yourself.

If there are servers, always talk to them. I ask if it's okay to sit? They typically ask if I'm getting a meal or just a drink? After that they might point me to a table or tell me to sit anywhere I like. If you don't like the seat they point you to, ask if you can sit where you prefer. I've never seen them say no.

I always ask to be seated at cafes, at bakerys where you order at counter and pay you can usually just take your food outside on a tray- just remember to always greet with a bonjour or bonsior and a merci when leaving.
