We are renting a car in Caen and driving to Bayeux. Can you recommend places to visit along the way?
You're looking at a total drive of half an hour. I think there are lots of lovely things to see in the area, but in between, I don't know. It's not like you need to break the drive up with stops along the way.
I'd just do the drive and if you see anything that looks like it's worth stopping, go ahead and stop.
Instead of driving directly to Bayeux, if you have the time, consider driving to Ouistreham and then heading west on D514 along the coast passing through the Gold and Juno landing sites and stop in Arromanches where there is an interesting museum that describes the Mulberry Harbor, part of which still can be seen. From there it's a short hop to Bayeux.
If you do Philip's route, you could also stop at Benouville which is the location of the Pegasus Bridge, liberated by the RAF glider pilots just after midnight (12:16 or 12:18??) on June 6. The parking lot is on the far side of the bridge and there is a small museum. The small Cafe Gondree beside the bridge advertises they were the "first family liberated on DDay" and one of the daughters of the original owner still runs the cafe. Stop and have a beer!
I thought the museum about the Mulberry harbors was very good as well.
Before you pick up your car you could take a stroll to and through William the Conqueror's fortress castle in the centre of Caen.

I agree with previous posts, and will add one of my favorite places in Normandy that is right between those two close towns. The Bény-sur-Mer Canadian cemetery is a very tranquil and peaceful place near Reviers. It is small, very manicured, and often there is no one there. It is inland on rising ground looking towards Juno Beach, which was a beach assigned to the Canadian military on D-day.
