Sites to see including art museums in Avignon

With one day to explore, suggestions of what to see, including art museums would be appreciated. I've checked out both the Rick Steves book and Fodor's. I would appreciate suggestions.

thank you

When will you be there? Our recommendations will be based on that information...so many things in that part of France are seasonal.

The museum inside the Papal Palace isn't that great, but it is still a pretty cool building. Definitely take some time to stroll the the Rocher des Doms (the park right near the Papal Palace), and stroll around the Pont d'Avignon.

The Musee Calvet, Musee Lapidaire, and Collection Lambert are all worthwhile art museums, although in one day, I think all three would just be overkill. Definitely check out les Halles d'Avignon (a big indoor market). It won't blow you away if you've been to some other great food markets in France, but it is still a great place to walk around and have some snacks, sample the local offerings.

I would stroll along the Rue de la Republique (the main drag). A walk onthe Ile de la Barthelasse (an island in the center of the Rhone) on a nice autumn day would be beautiful (don't try walking the whole island, just a little bit).

I would avoid eating a meal in the Place de l'Horloge (there is nothing wrong with it, but it will be overpriced and there are many better food options).
