I'll be in Paris, coming in on the Eurostar. Has anyone purchased a local SIM to use for data in an iPhone? Maybe near the gare du nord? I'd use it for Google maps and Skype mostly. Calling minutes aren't critical, as I use Skype. Thanks!
You'd think that mobile plan kiosks would be a common thing in airports and train stations by now, but the nearest Orange store to Gare Nord is on...
59 RUE Lafayette, 75009 Paris 09, France
Since they're so ubiquitous, it's probably a good choice. If you know of other service providers doing business in France, Google them like I did.
I'll just take this opportunity to say that the Orange store on Rue de Rivoli ripped us off on a couple of SIM cards a couple of years ago. Not much use to the OP, admittedly, and doesn't mean the whole company is evil, but I hate to miss a chance to express my continued disappointment. No more Oranges for this guy!
Try the offline maps app Ulmon. Uses the gps on your phone so doesn't need connection. Have for Paris and lots of other cities. Free! Or, see about data connection plan from your home provider.
We have Verizon, and was told just to check with them before we leave in June, they will take care of it.
If you really need data when out and about I would price buying a SIM over there but you may need an unlocked phone to do so. Data from US carriers seems quite expensive, starting at $30 for 120mb on ATT. The ATT store actually told me to be sure to turn off my data, every email that comes in will use it.
My dad ended up with a $200 phone bill just from emails coming in while in Canada for a week.
Paris has wifi spots around the city, we found one in a park near Notre Dame, hotels, some cafes and restaurants have it.....
My daughter lives in France and uses a cell service called Free. It costs 20 something euros a month for unlimited data, texts and calls to the US. She has an unlocked iPhone 4s. Maybe they have SIMs to purchase.
Thanks for the info! I do have an unlocked phone, so I'll give the ideas a try!
Here is a list of wifi spots. You might be able to get away without bothering to get a SIM for data amd just use wifi when it's available.
