Should I buy train tickets ahead of time?

Hi all,

I'll be traveling 8/28/19-9/13/19. In France, I will train from Paris to bayeux, Bayeux to Rouen, Rouen to Paris. Then, in Germany I will train from Munich to Salzburg and back.

Do you recommend buying tickets before I leave or is it fine and will there be plenty of spaceto wait until I get there and do it 1-2 days in advance of each trip?

Thanks for your input!

Hi,
It is best to buy Paris-Bayeux, Rouen-Paris, Munich-Salzburg-Munich in advance if you want to save some money: advance tickets are cheaper, even though you're travelling soon.

However, space is not a problem on any of the routes listed, so if you don't mind paying more and want to stay flexible, you can even buy on the spot. Seat 99% guaranteed rather than 100%, but you will be able to travel even if there are no seats.

Booking Bayeux to Rouen in advance has no advantage whatsoever.

Forgot to add that the advance tickets on the French routes you listed (except Bayeux-Rouen) are part-refundable, so it makes sense to buy them even if there's a chance you'll modify the booking later.

ticket bought early can be a third the price of ticket bought late. We paid 15 for the trip from Paris to Bayeux; we paid 35 for the Thalys to Amsterdam. bought late the Thalys ticket is often more than 100 and similar factors apply to most other tickets except for suburban local trains etc. Ticket bought very early at very low cost may be non -exchangeable.

Is Munich-Salzburg-Munich a day trip or multiple days ? For one day, a Bayern ticket covering the round trip can be bought day-of as long as you are leaving after 9 a.m. during the week or anytime on weekends -- if you have a travel companion, they can be added for very little.
