Will be on an Avalon cruise down the Rhine. A side excursion is offered to Colmar. Any feelings if this afternoon excursion is worthwhile? Anyone have thoughts or impressions on a brief visit to this city?
I loved Colmar. I think a brief visit would be great. The town is very walkable and charming and there are some nice museums. The only drawback I can see is that when it is time to leave, you won't want to.
Colmar is drop-dead gorgeous. It would be worth it just to wander around and appreciate the architecture. However, the Unterlinden Museum is a fine one, and the Isenheim Altarpiece is an acknowledged masterpiece. You should expect a lot of tourist traffic in the town, however; its beauty has not gone undiscovered.
It is overrated, worth a stop but half timberred towns start to look the same after one or two. I hope you are going off season.
We loved it -how brief and what is the itinerary on the excursion?
