Short Vacations During The Week

Hey yall, Im from South Coralina and I was wanting to know about taking short vacations during the week.See I work Mini Shift which means I work Friday to Sunday, 6:30am to 7:00pm, 12 hours. That leaves me Monday-Thursday off, every week. I would like to know if that is possible to Fly out Monday, get to France Tuesday morning and leave Thursday afternoon in time to be home before work on Friday. What are yalls opinions on that? Ive been to France and the Netherlands twice and know my way around. Jus need a change of scenery here and there.

Well, anything's possible. Is it logical or sensible? That's another question. Not trying to be snarky, just realistic. If money is no object, then sure you can take a short break to Paris for a couple of days, but it's a pretty pricey 'get away'. Just know that it would be more travel than actually being there so, for me personally, that wouldn't be enjoyable.

Yea i see where your coming from, but take the two days for just flying in reality thats a day and a half. But yea that makes sense.

In addition to what Nancy said, you aren't taking into account jet lag and lack of sleep, and their effects on both your day and a half in Paris and at work after your return.

When my daughter lived in the UK, I often took long weekends...2 or 3 full days there. It was wonderful. With airfare so inexpensive just now and your particular schedule...I'd shoot for doing it once per month. I just hope you are not a nurse on your Friday return to work for 12 hours, because you might start drooping about 3-4:00 PM, but that was me, and I didn't work 12 hour shifts, technically. I'd be drooping at work at that point, but was bright eyed and bushy tailed at 6:00 AM.

However, why aren't you taking a night flight out on Sunday night, after work? Where I live there are 10:00+ PM flights to Europe. I'm not sure if you are near a metropolitan area though. Monday thru much of Thursday would be even better use of your time, IMO. Or if you are wasting Monday waiting for you flight anyway, see if there is a day flight from your airport. But go! No reason not to at least try it. The nice thing about a short period in Europe is your biological clock doesn't totally shift to Europe time, at least mine didn't. As I think about it, my short trips were much easier to readjust at home than my now longer trips are, where I get fully entrenched in the time zone in which I'm visiting.

I know I could take a 4-6:00 PM flight and be back in Boston for a good nights sleep and return to work the next day. I don't think SC would be too much different so you get a nice leisurely early day still at your location of choice. Check your arrival times for back in the US and take the latest flight out of Europe that works for you. Travel to Europe should be a great side benefit of your schedule!

You may also want to look at environmental and other issues.

If, for instance, you want to spend a total of 15 days in Europe and can manage to take a vacation for that all at once instead of going for five three-day trips, you'll not only have a so much more enjoyable time, the downsides of traveling will be so much more in proportion with the joy of traveling:

  • costs of only one flight instead of five
  • 2 days of jetlag + 13 days of enjoying France vs. 10 days of jetlag + 5 days of enjoying France
  • negative environmental impact of only one flight vs. five flights

Also, you may want to consider two other issues:

  • You will probably be dead tired when you return to your 12 hour shift, after a long flight and a six hour change in time zones. That's not something all employers appreciate.
  • I have experienced so many delayed or even canceled flights that I always like to have a buffer day (or at least half a day) on my return trip. How is your employer going to like it if you show up for work several hours late or not at all because your flight was delayed or canceled?
