We are planning a fall trip through southern France and Chamonix is on our todo list. Hoping to take the Aiguille du midi cable car if weather condition permit. My questions is should we stay in Chamonix or just do a day trip from another location? We fly out of Geneva 4 days later so I am flexible. If Chamonix is worth staying how long and lodging recommendations?
Thanks

We stayed in Chamonix for four nights in Sept. 2022, and loved it! We really enjoyed Auberge du Manoir for its hospitality, views of Mont Blanc, and walkability in town. We would stay there again!

One thing to be aware of – many of the lifts closed on September 16 that year, the day before we arrived. So that meant we couldn’t do some of the hikes we hoped to do with riding up, hiking across, and riding back down again. But the Aiguille du Midi was open then. We were also able to take the cogwheel train to Montenvers.
There is a Chamonix app that gives good tourism info about the sights and the city.
We paired this trip with a 3 night stay in Annecy before returning to Paris to fly home. That was another lovely city to visit. We took a BlaBlaBus between the cities, as it was faster and cheaper than the train route.
Enjoy!

Agree w/ Laurie. A day trip does not do Chamonix justice. I say at least two
nights, as one night really only gives you the better part of two half days there.
But depending on where you are coming from, have some warm(er) clothes
available, as it could be brisk at the top of the AdM. Although maybe not as
big a deal in Sept, you would want to purchase a Mont Blanc pass ahead of
time and make a reservation for the AdM (but not too far ahead, so you can
scope the weather forecast first).
Chamonix is a long. somewhat narrow, valley, and there are lodging options
all along the way, but for this kind of a stay, being in or near Chamonix town
center is the best bet.
Annecy is worth one night as well, and more than likely you can get a bus from
Annecy right to Geneva Airport in time to make your GVA flight.
Thanks to Laurie and Shoeflyer. I had planned this trip, then canceled last year when there was a rail strike. The tips from both of you will be helpful when I re-schedule.
