I read somewhere that if you are over 60 you can get a discount on the Metro and other trains in Paris. If you get a Navigo card how does it know you are a senior citizen? If I am buying a ticket to Giverny do I just go to the station and tell them I am senior citizen? Do you have to buy that in advance?
There is no senior discount on the Metro unless you get a monthly pass which is actually a yearly pass with a monthly automatic payment of 44.40 EUR. It is a special Navigo Card and is not something a short term visitor can really use.
I don't believe there are any senior discounts available on TER NOMAD trains to Venon-Giverny.

Yes, there are. For a 'normal' return ticket you will pay 17,60€. With a Carte Avantage Senior you pay 12,30€. Unfortunately you will have to do several interregional trips before making advantage, since the cost for this Carte is 49€ (1 year validity).

yes, you buy the carte. it sometimes goes on sale near Black Friday.
There are several cards anyone can buy offering discounts for the national railways, but RATP discounts are only offered to residents over 62 years old and cost 44.40€ per month or 532.80€ per year. Perhaps that is what you read about.
You just heard wrong on the Navigo. The products available to tourists do not provide discounts, either for seniors or for teens who are not residents. Locals have Navigo cards and. there are senior cards and student cards for kids. But. for tourists you have the Navigo Easy for individual tickets where children 4-9 get half price tickets but 10 and up are full fare and day passes . And the Navigo Decouverte is available for daily, weekly or monthly passes. There is no child or senior version of these. There is no reason local tax payers should provide discounts to people wealthy enough to travel internationally -- they do provide discounts for their own youth and seniors.
The place we did find lots of senior discounts for tourist visitors was Spain and there are a few places in town where seniors get a one or two Euro discount on admission tickets. The Jeu de Paume is one and I have had those discounts at other photo exhibits.
