Self Driving Barge Trip October 2020 two couples one boat one way

Looking for good self barging company to do a one way cruise in France. We were thinking perhaps the South of France might be best weather wise that time of year. One way route.

I have seen lots of recommendations for the Canal du Midi. Would that be the best option for first time visitors to France? I read were there is a problems with some of the trees along this route. Is that a negative for thip?

We are two couples mid 50-60 looking for local flavor. Food and wine.

So many areas that look wonderful. Boating companies with different approaches to this trip. We love the look of Penichette boats with Locaboat Holidays. Are the newer boats better for handling and docking? Le Boat?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks ~

The Canal du Midi has been in existence since the 17th century and offers a lot to see. I would recommend it for those on the French canals for the first time. The plane trees have been attacked by an insect which is killing them. Many have already been removed but the canal remains picturesque and very enjoyable.

I don´t think the rental company itself makes lot of difference. Newer boats will cost more to rent, older or smaller boats cost less. These are the three largest companies in France:

I would also vote for the Canal du Midi. Although I haven't ridden a boat on it, I have walked along it several times.

I have tackled the Canal du Midi twice, once as an out and back on Minervois Cruisers, going as far as Trebe before returning to Le Somail, and the second time as a one way beginning in Agde, and ending up in Carcassonne.

The experience is grand, and just being on the canal is rejuvenating. Be aware that October is a little late in the season, depending upon when you start out. It was chilly on the Canal in September (mornings and later in the evening) so be prepared for that. The Canal closes for the season on October 31, 2020, so take that into account.

I saw the beautiful line of trees near Trebes one summer years ago, but they are gone now, although the place isn't all that barren, because not all the trees were infected. Don't plan on swimming or fishing in the Canal--it's not that kind of place. Much good wine and food and of course, camaraderie with your fellow travelers. The Northern canals are probably less warm later in the season.

The cost of the boat is amazing--think about it as travel, sleeping accommodations, and entertainment--and shared between 4 people is very affordable. Not many Americans on the Canal, which was a real plus. This is how Europeans take their vacations, so you will meet some interesting folks. Oh, when choosing a boat, even though there are 4 of you, pick one which will accommodate at least 6, and preferably 8 passengers. You'll thank me for the extra room recommendation, because the boats are relatively small in the interiors. I would need at least 3 toilets for 4 people. A separate fridge for drinks would be nice, as well.

I have not done the Midi, but I can tell you that the season is really over by mid September in the Northern waterways. We did the Saone in mid September a few years ago and many/most of the venues that cater to the canal boats had shut their doors. We had to cook on the boat many more nights than we wanted, as opposed to dining ashore. There were very few other boats on the water, as well, so we had few people to exchange sea stories (lies) with; one of the joys of boating.
