Seine cruise, evening; romantic of course...

Wife and I are taking each other to Paris next week and would appreciate recommendations regarding cruises on the Seine. I've read all sorts of reviews and it seems tricky to choose the best cruise for us. To no surprise it seems obvious that people get what the pay for. Some reviewers complain that they felt rushed and some state that the food is generic, bland, touristy and so forth.

For us, the food is secondary, we have more restaurant suggestions that we can ever get to and experience suggests we shouldn't choose the cheapest or the most expensive Seine cruise. We are staying at Saint-Germain-des-Prés near Pont Neuf and are interested in "moments" i.e. a sweet, romantic feel for the evening.

Suggestions, folks?

Since the food is secondary, and you have more restaurant suggestions than you can ever get to, you might want to take a cruise without a meal. There is nothing quite like a night time cruise with the lights of Paris light the place up for making romantic memories. Even good food on the cruise will, in my opinion, detract from the experience. We've taken several cruises and the ones offered by the Vedettes du Pont Neuf are the best in our book.

We went on the Vedettes du Pont Neuf cruise and enjoyed it. We didn’t do a dinner cruise because our main priority was to take in the sights from the river at night. We were there in June so we took the 10:45pm sailing so that it would be dark out during the cruise. Also by leaving at a quarter till the top of the hour, the boat was at the Eiffel Tower at 11:00pm so we could see the five minutes that the Eiffel Tower sparkles. (It sparkles at the top of the hour for five minutes).

Wife and I are appreciative of the clear and useful responses. Told wife about seeing Eiffel Tower during the sparkles and she is all in. Thanks, again.

hey rschoen
check out getyourguide.com we did a champagne cruise last year which was great. they do have a paris illuminations cruise. since you have your novel of restaurant suggestions i would forego a dinner cruise. we haven't had issues with get your guide, loved them for the stuff we did through them. another site you may like is cedricsparis.com, different tours plus he donates to a worthy cause. enjoy

Just want to add to my earlier comment: Our cruise left at 10:45pm and immediately turned in the direction of the Eiffel Tower. It cruised down to it in time for the sparkle, then headed back past where we had left from to see sights further up the river. By going at that time they made sure we saw the sparkle which I really enjoyed. Sit up on the top open area too. It’s a nice cruise.

We haven't taken a dinner cruise, although a Vedettes de Pont Neuf cruise is part of almost every Paris visit. You can even buy your ticket online at a small discount.

@rschoen

  1. I've been researching the same thing and agree with the above posters on Vedetted du pont neuf - that's my plan too.
  2. I grew up in Reisterstown and spent the first 18 years of my life there - small world :)

I thought a cruise after sunset was nice. Romantic? If you can be romantic in a group of strangers. The Vedettes de Pont Neuf are quite large but have plenty of seating on top for great views. Maybe a walk along the seine afterward?

I agree that a nighttime cruise (no dinner) is the way to go. I liked the sparkles, but I also agree that it's not a romantic experience. The diesel smell alone sort of precludes romance!

Thanks, everyone. Romance is sometimes just a kiss, hug, love ya...thanks for sharing this moment together, etc.
Actually, planning the trip with ideas from this forum is a little bit romantic. The sizzling infatuation was years ago.
Still, this will be our first time together in Paris, maybe we will find a way to stir up some sizzle, wink, wink.

Calife for a dinner cruise and the food was pretty good but probably tasted better because of the surroundings. A much smaller boat than most and we had were several birthdays and an engagement, it felt pretty romantic to me and the wife. The captain had the boat turning in front of the Eiffel Tower right when it lit up which was really nice. Make sure you book ahead and are on the upper deck.

Just be aware that sunset in Paris next week is a little after 9:00pm. So if you want to see the lights and the EIffel "sparkling," plan a late cruise.

Agreed. Forget the food, just do the cruise & maybe a glass of champagne. We used the one near Pont Neuf on my birthday in January. It was great.
