Please can anyone recommend a hotel, guesthouse or pension in Paris which fits the following. 1) in walking distance from Gare de Nord. 2) moderate price. 3) quiet and pleasant environment. 4) easy to book on-line or via e-mail. I’m not seeking anything luxurious or glitzy – just easy to reach from Gare de Nord and quiet and pleasant to stay at. Many thanks for any suggestions.

What is your nightly budget in Euros and what time of year? Prices can nearly double depending on season and events.
More importantly, what is your idea of walking distance? For some, it's 10 minutes, for others it is 30 minutes or more.

And really, train station and pleasant don’t go together in most European cities. So that “walking distance” should be at least 20-30 minutes or it’s going to be gritty. Not necessarily unpleasant, just not “tourist beautiful”.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with staying near the train stations of Paris. Gare Montparnasse is central to a number wonderful neighborhoods, as is Gare de Lyon, anywhere near the south of Gare du Nord is perfectly fine. Not many tourists are going to find suitable hotels to the west/northwest of Gare du Nord, in the Goutte d'Or region, but there are plenty of excellent locations a short walk to the south, not to mention scores of fabulous restaurants.

Thanks for those comments. Sorry not to have been more specific. I had been thinking of mid-September but, if that's still a very high price period, please tell me when prices decline. What are October hotel prices like for instance? Re price I was hoping to do it within 100 Euros per night for a single room with private bathroom (no need for TV etc). Re walking distance, I'd hope for within 20 minutes walk from Gare de Nord. Does that prompt any suggestions?

September/October are peak months for hotels. However, those around Gare du Nord will likely be less affected by price increases during that time. There is an Ibis hotel about a 3 minute walk from the front exit of the Gare du Nord which typically has very reasonable rates. There is also an Ibis, just to the east, the Ibis budget Paris La Villette, that is under 75€ per night.

Under 100€ per night is going to severely limit your choices even during the least busy months which as noted above September and October are not. I looked up the price for a hotel near Gare du Nord that a friend is staying at this month for a little over 100€ per night and it is over 200€ in September. Take a look at Hotel Avalon Cosy, it might be close to budget and is a short walk from the station.

Looking at hotel prices, I've been surprised that they're often substantially lower in August than in September, whereas I'd expected the reverse. Are lower August hotel prices a standard feature of the Paris tourist year or do they reflect that the current heatwaves are reducing visitor numbers?

August is low season for hotels in Paris. Many offer free nights or fee breakfast as an incentive.
