Seeking Paris hotel in walking distance from Gare de Nord

Walking distance from Gare du Nord AND a "quiet, pleasant environment" is not really a thing. Just saying...

What is your nightly budget in Euros and what time of year? Prices can nearly double depending on season and events.

More importantly, what is your idea of walking distance? For some, it's 10 minutes, for others it is 30 minutes or more.

And really, train station and pleasant don’t go together in most European cities. So that “walking distance” should be at least 20-30 minutes or it’s going to be gritty. Not necessarily unpleasant, just not “tourist beautiful”.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with staying near the train stations of Paris. Gare Montparnasse is central to a number wonderful neighborhoods, as is Gare de Lyon, anywhere near the south of Gare du Nord is perfectly fine. Not many tourists are going to find suitable hotels to the west/northwest of Gare du Nord, in the Goutte d'Or region, but there are plenty of excellent locations a short walk to the south, not to mention scores of fabulous restaurants.

Thanks for those comments. Sorry not to have been more specific. I had been thinking of mid-September but, if that's still a very high price period, please tell me when prices decline. What are October hotel prices like for instance? Re price I was hoping to do it within 100 Euros per night for a single room with private bathroom (no need for TV etc). Re walking distance, I'd hope for within 20 minutes walk from Gare de Nord. Does that prompt any suggestions?

September/October are peak months for hotels. However, those around Gare du Nord will likely be less affected by price increases during that time. There is an Ibis hotel about a 3 minute walk from the front exit of the Gare du Nord which typically has very reasonable rates. There is also an Ibis, just to the east, the Ibis budget Paris La Villette, that is under 75€ per night.

Under 100€ per night is going to severely limit your choices even during the least busy months which as noted above September and October are not. I looked up the price for a hotel near Gare du Nord that a friend is staying at this month for a little over 100€ per night and it is over 200€ in September. Take a look at Hotel Avalon Cosy, it might be close to budget and is a short walk from the station.

Looking at hotel prices, I've been surprised that they're often substantially lower in August than in September, whereas I'd expected the reverse. Are lower August hotel prices a standard feature of the Paris tourist year or do they reflect that the current heatwaves are reducing visitor numbers?

Business people, trade fairs, conventions all push Paris hotel prices in September.

August is low season for hotels in Paris. Many offer free nights or fee breakfast as an incentive.

Is there a particular reason you wish to stay within walking distance of Gare du Nord? Will you be making multiple train trips from that station? Or is it just because you arrive there?
Gare du Nord is very well connected by metro to the rest of Paris, so there might be other options elsewhere in Paris.

Proximity to Gar du Nord was only because I'd be arriving there on Eurostar mid-evening and it would be nice not to travel much further. Any suggestions for good hotels elsewhere? From studying Paris hotel prices I now recognise that I will probably need to pay much more than 100 Euros per night for mid-September - more like 170 Euros, say. So far the Ibis Gare du Nord La Fayette is looking like an option, though reviews are mixed. Any suggestions for hotels in a similar price range but a different part of Paris, hopefully with attractive or interesting places nearby?

You might consider Hotel 85 rue Honore. It is well located about three blocks east of the Louvre and three blocks from pont Neuf on the right bank (north side) of the river. The room was small but quiet and it had good air conditioning. The staff was helpful and the breakfast was very nice. Metro stops and a laundromat are very conveniently located nearby. We paid about 800 Euros for four nights two weeks ago (July 20-24 2026).

If you can defer your trip a couple of weeks you may see hotel rates drop in early October.

I'm currently looking at moving my dates to the end of September and beginning of October out of worries at weather forecasts that the heatwaves may continue in northern France. However those hotel prices, which I've looked at, seem to be rising slightly at start of October. Am now looking away from Gare de Nord.

Perhaps stay near that station for your first night, then move to a nicer location for the rest of your stay?
I’m a solo female traveler and didn’t find the area too bad, though I was not out at night.
Last Sept, I stayed at Hotel Relais du Pres on Rue Simard, about 12 mins walk from the station.
I was there two nights, just to get over jet lag before I got the train south.
Basic, clean, decent breakfast.

I do not make weather predictions and the weather this summer has been historically hot, but a heat wave in September? No.

Paris Fashion Week runs September 28 to October 6. That event will raise prices and affect availability across the board.

I would aim for mid-October for weather and prices.

Thanks very much to everyone for your many helpful contributions. I'm now seeking instead to book a hotel which I've found in a pleasant-sounding area near Pere Lachaise, which I can reach via Metro from Gare du Nord. I've switched to a later date to be very much on the safe side heatwave-wise.

I think you've made a good choice to metro from Gare de Nord. It is incredibly simple and convenient to get virtually anywhere within Paris via Metro and the Gare de Nord station will serve you well. Last October, we arrived via Strasbourg to Gare de Nord and stayed in Le Marais. The Metro connection to Bastille took all of 15 minutes and our hotel was a 5 minute walk from there.
