Seeking Butter

I’m in Paris for one more day. My DIL says she would love to sample “French crystal butter.” I didn’t know French butter was described that way. I just know I Love French Butter because it tastes sooo good!
Where can I find “French Crystal Butter?” And what would the label say?
I am clueless as I don’t speak French.
I would appreciate all suggestions.

You are looking for butter with sea salt crystals. The label will say “cristaux” and “sel de mer”.

Look in the butter section in supermarkets. Search for:

“Beurre aux cristaux de sel”

You will find all kinds of them. Quite often with the mention “aux cristaux de sel de Guérande"

Guérande is an area in France on the Atlantic coast where excellent salt is produced

the butter with salt crystals sold at Beillevaire cheese shops is really excellent. They have sweet unsalted, demi salted and the one with crystals -- really good butter. Or as noted, any grocery store will have several varieties of ordinary butter with the sale crystals.

Thank you all so much!!! Thank you Laura and Janet for telling me the words I need to see on the label. (Janet all the Beillevaire shops are closed until Tuesday.)
JoLui, thank you for the visual.
There is a Carrefour market close by, so I will go after breakfast to check if they have the butter I want, but buy it later in the day. No refrigerator in room.
With limited time, I hoped someone would direct me to the butter my dil wants (she has never been to France, but is a foodie). And you all delivered!

If you have trouble finding it, come to the UK. Every M & S Simply Food carries it. (LOL)

I used it up the other day. I described it to someone as "crunchy butter."

They'll have it. Beurre d'isigny is a very good brand and is widely available. If you find their fromage frais with caramalised apple I strongly urge you to try it, I discovered it at a local Auchan when I was in France a few weeks ago and bought some more to take home with me, divine stuff.

Hopefully someone can advice:
I went to Carrefour and saw these 2 butters. Which should I buy?
1-“reflets de France, beurre de baratte, A La fleur de sel de Guérande”
2-“Grand fermage, beurre Demi-sel, aux Cristaux de sel de mer Noirmoutier.

They are approximately the same industrial products with, in my opinion, the same taste qualities.

In any case I assume that you are not a specialist in salt crystal butter and there is little chance that you will be able to determine which is the best, so take either one or both.

Or search for “fromager” on Google maps, it is in these stores that you are most likely to find top quality salt butter.

Fromagerie: if I buy butter from a cheese shop, will it be cut from a huge chunk?
I think I need to buy butter well wrapped.

I don’t think I can discern between quality of butters, but I want to buy quality butter for my dil.

I don’t know where you are staying or how far you are willing to travel for butter but you could try Le Grande Épicerie in Le Bon Marché. I am suggesting this because many of the smaller local places are closed on Mondays.

Or, the food hall in Galeries Lafayette. The individual stands are on the ground floor, while their huge, quality supermarket is one floor down.

Le Grande Épicerie in Le Bon Marché or the Galeries Lafayette food hall, two large quality department stores.

Thanks, all.
We ended our day in the Rue Cler area, and so went into the Fromagerie…and bought butter.
Not sure if it has salt crystals, but I think my DIL will appreciate that it came from there and not the Supermarket. Also, the shopkeeper vacuum sealed the butter…so the butter shouldn’t leak in the suitcase.
I didn’t see the replies about the Bon Marché until now…or I would have gone there.
We traveled all over on the metro today!
Thanks to all for helping me find butter.
I bought 4 blocks. 2 for DIL, one for a good friend (loves butter) and one for me. I’ll compare it to Kerrygold when I get home.

Hi Carol, I don’t know if you’re still in France but if you are have you considered that the authorities may consider butter of any type to be a “liquid”? Maybe it would fit in your 1 quart clear plastic “Liquids“ bag In your carry-on. You’ve probably already thought of this, but just in case. The butter sounds delicious.

Kay,
Just arrived back in USA with butter in checked bag. When I did a previous search on the Forum, I did read that butter could/would be confiscated because it would be considered a liquid.
Interestingly, while TSA checked hubby’s bag because he had salt from the Camargue in several containers, TSA pulled out butter from another lady’s carry-on. She was allowed to keep her butter because it was vacuum-sealed.

I brought back butter a lot. They do take it out and look at it, but I don’t think it’s because the liquid. it’s a block so when they look at it on the screen, they see a block of something and they have to look at them. I’ve had the same thing happen with candles.
