I'm considering renting a scooter (50cc) in Paris for a day. The purpose would not be to drive around within Paris, but to have a nice day trip outside of Paris through the "countryside." Has anyone done this before? Tips on who to rent from and destinations to not miss? Thanks!
Have you ever been to Paris before?
I once drove around a roundabout on Champs Élysées, looked in my rearview mirror and saw what must have been 50 cars right behind me. It's a very, very congested city and only the brave ride motorcycles and scooters there. The suburbs are also just as congested and no place for a tourist on 2 wheels.
Keep in mind that a 50cc is only good for about 35mph on the flat. In CO, a 50cc is not licensed because it is consider a motorized bicycle.
St Germain-en-Laye is a very nice town (with a famous chateau) outside Paris that you can get to very easily on the RER. See if you can rent a scooter there (Google). Lots of beautiful countryside and charming villages accessed by two lane roads from there that are not congested. I wish we had done this when we were in Paris this Feb. i grew up in St Germain-en-Laye and a nearby village. Would be very fun! Hope you can do it... enjoy!
Is a scooter rental that much cheaper than a car?
Are you experienced on a scooter?
here is one site I found by doing a search for 'scooter rental in paris'
As I mentioned, my goal is not to drive the scooter in Paris, but outside of Paris (thanks for the ingenious suggestion of travelling outside of Paris and then renting - I'll definitely look for something like that!). I have driven a scooter before and I'm quite use to cars being behind me. ;) Also, it's not about the price, it's the experience that being on a scooter (or any "open air" type of vehicle gives) that you can't even get from a convertible.
i kind of agree with Jean-Paul. I would rent something that has the potential of keeping up with the traffic and not serve as a moving road block at 30 mph. I would rent at least 125cc or prefer 250.
I remember the misery of being in a car trying to drive up to Volterra in Tuscany behind a row of 10 or so timid American tourists on scooters crawling up the hill at about 10 miles an hour and blocking traffic for miles behind since the roads were narrow and twisty and their rude selves didn't have the courtesy to pull off occasionally and let people by them. I'd get something with enough power that you are not a menace or an annoyance to everyone else.
I have spent a lot of time in and around Paris as well as the surrounding countryside...my one statement to you is that just because you can doesn't mean you should. I'll leave it at that.
