Sarlat to Burgundy

My husband and I will be traveling by car from Sarlat to Burgundy. From everything I've read it sounds like Beaune is the best base for exploring the region. Sarlat to Beaune is a long drive. I was hoping for recommendations on a town to spend the night on the way to Beaune. Any recommendations for other base areas other than Beaune? This will be the first part of November. Also wondering if it's best to book way ahead or will it be possible to book places to stay on the road.

Clermont Ferrand is about halfway and certainly worth a visit. The center of France doesn't get a lot of print, but it's worth the stop. This is an area of dormant or extinct volcanoes.

The yearly Hospice de Beaune wine auction and festivities are the 17-19 of November. November may seem like an off-month, but it isn't. Be sure to reserve.

In October we will be doing the same drive in reverse (Beaune to Sarlat) and booked one night at this B&B: http://jardindarsac.canalblog.com to break up the long drive. It's about 3 hours 45 minutes from Beaune, but will break that up with sightseeing along the way. We wanted to be within 2 hours of Sarlat in order to visit their market on Saturday morning, then will staying just outside Beynac at one of Rick's recommendations ( Le Petit Versialles) for five nights.
