Sarlat-le-Caneda: things to do

Hi!

My aunt is in Sarlat-le-Canada until the first week in April and my husband and I are planning to joining her for her last week there. She's already booked a tour of Lascaux 2 for us on the day the cave opens for the season.

I am COMPLETELY unfamiliar with the town and with that part of France. Any suggestions from Rick Steves folk for what's cool/fun/historic/foodie/museum-y or unusual in the area?

For contest, we like food, wine, cheese, music, theatre, museums, history, soccer, pubs, hiking, biking, walking... there's not much we won't do or try. Thanks in advance! :-)

Since your aunt will already be there, is there any reason not to get her input? I would think she could cross off things she will have already done that weren't really worthwhile, highlight things she enjoyed enough to recommend to you, and "save the best for last" things she wants all of you to enjoy together.

That said, your list of all the things you like indicates that you'll be happy travelers (and fun to be with!) no matter what. I'm sure you'll have a great time!

The market was one of the best we’ve seen in France. It was running on Saturdays and Wednesday’s when we were there. This is foie Gras central so if you are adventurous eaters your in for a treat. So easy to put together a great picnic. The town is beautiful!

I would agree with Alan that Sarlat-le-Caneda has the best Market that we visited in France. We were there for the Saturday Market and picked up some delicious items for a picnic lunch. It’s a lovely town to stroll and take in the wonderful vibe of the region. I believe it will “tick all your boxes.” Fond memories.

Sarlat is a perfect spot to stay as it has plenty of restaurants, but besides the market, not much else to do. But if you have a car the Dordogne region has plenty to offer. Lascaux was outstanding, Beynac may be the prettiest village I've ever been to. Take the time to visit the castle then walk down through the village to the river. Canoeing is popular between Cenac and Beynac but probably a bit early in the season.

Rent a canoe and paddle down the river to Beynac. The company will pick you up there and return you to your starting point.
