Sarlat accommodations?

We are taking a Viking river cruise which ends in Bordeaux around the 1st of September. We would like to then take a train to Sarlat from Bordeaux for a few days. Any suggestions on where to stay in Sarlat or how long? Is a car necessary? Thank you.

I would recommend a car, as the public transport connections are not great. There is a Europcar office there. You want to be in Sarlat on Saturday for the market, but you could settle for the Wednesday one, which is much smaller. If you are able to visit Perigueux, it will be hosting the Felibree festival earlier in the summer but should still have its flowers strung up all over town. We saw them in St Cyprien this year, and it was very charming. Get a place with AC, as it's likely to be very hot there in early September.

Unfortunately, a car is necessary to explore the area around Sarlat. The area is beautiful and there are wonderful old towns to explore, prehistoric caves, and lovely scenery. We enjoyed a week in an apartment on the edge of town which made parking and travel around the area convenient. Our apartment was large, well-equipped, and sparkling clean. The owners are bi-lingual and available to trouble shoot your travel questions. Contact Maison Pierre D'or. The apartments are available for rent directly from the owners or through companies such as VRBO.

Spend as many days as possible in the area around Sarlat. We love the area. We stay in gites so I can't recommend a place for shorter stays. A car is a must to really see the beauty of the area.

I'd recommend a car but I wouldn't call it a necessity. There are a lot of local tour companies which depart from Sarlat and which will drive you around the region in half-day or full-day tours. Want to see the pre-historic caves? There's a tour for that. Want to see the castles and such? There's a tour for that, as well. It's way more fun having your own car, but if you averse to that idea you can still see quite a bit in this area.

Late to this post. When in Sarlat without a car, maybe consider 'Allo Philippe Taxi' (0608573010). Msr. Mouret is an excellent driver with the added value of having lived in the area all his life. Ask him about his earlier career as the bodyguard for Johnny Halladay.
I am done. The end.

I really enjoyed my stay at this B&B. I had some train-strike related problems and the owner really put herself out to help me. See my review on TripAdvisor.

We love the beautiful, spacious rooms at Les Cordeliers! Innkeepers, Chris and Amanda, are very welcoming and the perfect hosts!

We too had a nice stay at Les Cordeliers. We were there this past September. It's right around the corner from old town center, so it's a convenient location and perhaps quieter than being right in the center. We paid a very reasonable rate. The rooms are extremely spacious although the decor is a bit out of date. The breakfast was very nice. Rooms are on the 2nd and 3rd floors, and there is no lift. The curved staircase going from floor 2 to 3 has some steps that are a bit narrow and crooked, so anyone with mobility issues might want to ask for a 2nd floor room. The owner, Chris, told me that they bought a second property in Sarlat a number of years ago, the former mayor's home, and after extensive renovations. they are anxious to purchase furnishings and open it but they won't do that until they get the current B&B sold. The new one has a lift and is on an acre of property, I believe he said. He said it's also within easy walking distrance to the old town center and it will have a large garden area for guests to sit and relax in.

I'm with both Bobs--another voice for Villa des Consuls. Davide and his cat will take care of you. Reasonably-priced decent value lodgings. Bonne chance Patty.

We also stayed at Villa Des Consuls. There were 3 of us, and we had a 2-bedroom apartment. Very spacious! With a nice patio/terrace. Location is excellent. We had a rental car. They have a parking garage that was a 5 - 10 minute walk from the apartments.
