For those of you who have spent time in the Luberon - was wondering about these two towns as a base for a potential future trip. Would like some life in the village altho not overly touristy - and be able to walk to a bakery. (I read Peter Mayle lived in Vaugines if my info is correct!)
I've not been to Vaugines but in general, if the goal of your stay is to specifically visit the Luberon, it is more convenient to stay north of the Luberon hills/mountains. Most of the Luberon sights are north of that ridge, and the road that crosses it between Lourmarin and Bonnieux gets busy and annoying pretty fast.
If your goal is a broader exploration of Provence, then Vaugines is perfectly fine and grants easier access to Aix, the Verdon, Arles, etc.
St Saturnin is cute, not touristy, and well positioned to visit the famous Luberon villages and the less famous ones, as well as to explore places to the north (Sault, Montbrun les Bains, the Ventoux, etc.
Balso - I’ve been to the Provence area around Aix several times - so Luberon villages and markets was the thought this time around. I will look further into Saint Saturnin - thank you!
