I plan to stay in Bruges, but want do a day trip along the coast to visit the WW2 Dunkirk Operation Dynamo museum and to Calais to see the lace museum and Rodin sculptures. i am female and would be driving on my own. I'm trying to determine the safety risk of this plan. Has anyone traveled this area recently?

I’ve stayed in Dunkirk with my wife. Nice accommodations and pleasant to walk around. I don’t see any issues that would leave one in doubt of personal safety.

I think as a female travelling alone, keep the car doors locked when driving and take the same safety precautions when in an area you are unfamiliar with. From what I have read, it is the women living in those refugee camps who have been and are very vulnerable to sexual assaults and not tourists.

I think it’s a fair question, although I agree there doesn’t seem to be much risk for the ordinary traveler in this region. It’s not \that there are migrants there that themselves pose a potential risk, but that there are ruthless organized criminal gangs operating there to transport and exploit them.

The organised crime groups operating in the area will not have the slightest interest in tourists visiting the area. You will be fine.

I'm impressed that the OP is aware of this humanitarian disaster, since most of the world isn't. I haven't been in the area, but from all the reports on TV, the immigrants are in isolated areas and their welfare is attended to by local volunteers.
