Safe way to get from Paris Nord to hotel in 9th arrondissement

Hello.

My family of four (all adults) and all our luggage, of course, will be arriving at Paris Nord on the Eurostar from London around 7:00 p.m. Some posters on the site have said the area can be a bit unsafe. We have never been to France before and do not speak French. Can those of you who know advise me of the safest way to get to our hotel in the 9th arrondissement? Uber, public transport, taxi, etc.? Also, if a taxi, what can I expect to pay and how do I make sure that I am dealing with the official taxi company? Lastly, how do I find the taxi stand or Uber driver upon arrival? Is Uber an unsafe idea? I just want to be sure to be able to identify the scammers.

Thanks for your help.

Do you know the closest metro stop in the 9eme so we can know a little more precisely where you are?

As far as safety, I would not worry about that. While it is true there are areas near the rail stations that are less than optimal, as long as you are exercising caution (since you will have your luggage, you will stand out a little to pick pockets and such), you needn't worry about that.

Are you preferring a vehicle rather than using public transport?

Gare du Nord is in the 9th or perhaps only a few hundred feet over the border into the 10th. So to help you, please give us the name of the hotel. You might be within walking distance.

If not, follow signs to the taxi stand. Don't answer anyone offering anything; you won't be impolite. Scammers don't deserve courtesy, so don't hesitate to walk on by without looking at them. Go get in the taxi line and stay there until it's your turn at the front, even if someone comes over and offes you a ride while you're in line.

Finally, look at the taxi meter when you get in the cab. There should be only a couple euros on it for various charges.

It's not unsafe but the many panhandlers in and around the station can be annoying. Four adults certainly won't be in any danger in a group.

The Metro might be cheaper than a cab, even with four people, although it's not recommended if you have very large amounts of luggage as there are many stairs and long passageways.

This blog provides a photo tour of Gare du Nord. There is also a substantial section on personal security, where the essence boils down to keeping your head up, your luggage secure, your wallet under your shirt rather than in a rear pocket, and being rude to avoid anyone or group that seems overly attentive. The blog's map unfortunately does not show the taxi queue. Always use the line-up and ignore hustlers offering rides. Go out the front door to the plaza and the cabs are to the left, more or less; this may help a little: http://www.eurostar.com/sites/default/files/pdf/connections_info/GDN_map.pdf

Fun, huh? Sure; you will be fine; thousands are every day.

I always take the metro. With luggage, however, I think your best bet is to take a cab from the taxi stand near the front of the station.

I'm not sure it's always possible to identify the scammers. They come in all shapes and sizes. My personal security measures are to keep the important stuff in a neck wallet inside my shirt. I reduce my stuff to one handle so I can keep track of it easily. I keep some cash in my pocket but not enough to ruin my day if I lost it. When crowds get thick, I keep my free hand in my pocket.

You will solve 90 percent of your problem by knowing where you are going, or at least appearing to know, and walking directly there. If you need to consult a map, go somewhere out of the way/uncrowded and take your time - keep your wits and keep your game face on (the "I know what I'm doing" face rather than the "deer in the headlights" face).

Taxi from the official rank is safe--just make sure you stay in the line. But four people with luggage will need a van, which will be more expensive than regular taxi.

In addition to the metered fare you will only pay 4€ for the 4th passenger, and there are no fees for luggage in the trunk.

You can use www.taxifarefinder.com to get an approximate fare - the middle range is usually reliable.
It's always a good idea to print out your hotel's address, including the Postal Code.

Uber is not allowed to pick up passengers at train stations or at airports. You would need to be able to find out where the driver is, which might not be easy, given the traffic around Gare du Nord.

We took the RER from Gare du Nord to Gare St. Lazare , if your hotel is near St. Lazare. It was very easy, inexpensive and safe. We also don't speak French, but most younger French people speak English and are helpful when asked. We always felt safe in Paris. It's nice that so many people are out walking around.
