Another victim of neglect of monumental proportions in Paris. :-)
SETE is reluctant to close the tower for a long time because of the tourist revenue that would be lost, it added.
Eiffel had a permit for the tower to stand for 20 years. It was to be dismantled in 1909, when its ownership would revert to the City of Paris. The City had planned to tear it down (part of the original contest rules for designing a tower was that it should be easy to dismantle ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eiffel_Tower )
Suppose it is no surprise that so long after its original termination date, it needs serious maintenance.
Completed at the same time as the tower , The Bridge over the Firth of Forth in Edinburgh is largely built of steel , as the tower is wrought iron . One hundred and thirty years later , building technology has dramatically increased , and many improvements have been developed in Maintenace and preservation. The section on maintenance and restoration in this article on the bridge , raises optimism about what may be in store for the tower - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forth_Bridge#Operation
How many years very recently was the area at the base of the ET a construction zone as they put up barriers all around it to prevent a terrorist attack? It was a nightmare trying to walk around that area. Why didn’t they spend those years also restoring the tower? Smh
I'm sure they think Notre Dame and The Eiffel Tower being out of commission at the same time would severely affect tourism. My husband wants to wait for Notre Dame to reopen before going to Paris for the first time (I've been before). But then image the crowds rushing to go see it.
