Im traveling by car from Versailles to MSM and am looking for a scenic route. Considering the 4 hour tour through Chartres (not stopping) or the 3 hour tour that passes south of Rouen and via Caen. I do love the small towns along the coast but that may add a significant amount of time and will get us to MSM too late.

You will get to the real scenery when you get to MSM. You're in for a scenic treat.
However, the route that passes south of Rouen consists of at least 2 Auto-routes, these are like an interstate here, with all the scenery and enjoyment of an interstate.
What you would ideally like to do (you said scenery) is get away from the interstates, get out in the country, away from large cities like Chartres and Caen.
If you're sleeping in MSM, you don't want to arrive late.
If you're not sleeping in MSM, you definitely don't want to arrive late or some of the sights will be closed.
