Roussillon - 30 vs 60min hike?

France trip in May w 5 nights in Provence. When visiting Roussillon, I was wondering if it is worth spending the extra 30min to do the 60min hike through the ochre hills or will you pretty much see the same things & get a feel for it on the 30min hike? We are going to the Village of Bories & Gordes prior and Lourmarin afterwards so trying to spend our time here wisely. We've allocated an hour to visit (+ 1hr for lunch) so should we spend 30min checking out the town & 30min hiking or skip town tour and do the full 60min hike? Would appreciate thoughts on this. Merci!

I’d skip both hikes and spend that 1 hr walking all over town. We did and loved it. Roussillon is charming. But I don’t think 1 hr will be enough to actually take it all in and savor it, which is why I’d skip the hike and give as much time as possible to enjoying Roussillon itself.

We did the 30 minute hike and saw plenty of ochre formations. We thought it was beautiful and something you probably won’t see anywhere else. 30 minutes was good for us.

Roussillon was one of our favorite villages. We spent several hours exploring the town and enjoying lunch. You really need more than an hour or two to truly enjoy this village.

Thanks for the input Susan and Ellen, I wasn't aware Roussillon was such a pretty town. I thought the draw was really all about the ochre hills. We may need to extend our time there then - time for a 30min hike, tour town and lunch. Thanks for your input. I'm excited to see it!

If you are short on time, you might want to cut Lourmarin, unless you are going towards Aix afterwards. This is because the road to Lourmarin is very slow, the drive from Roussillon will take 40 minutes even though it's only 15 miles.
Ménerbes might be a better use of your limited time.

We'll be based in St Remy de Provence. See our planned itinerary below. I had read such great things about Lourmarin and it looks beautiful from google images. Its definitely not on the way to anything. I was planning on a 30min drive per google maps. Sounds like I need to adjust that or consider another town as you recommended?

Here's our Provence itinerary to give you an idea:
Day 1 St Remy de Provence
Day 2 Les-Baux-de-Provence, Carrières de Lumières + Arles
Day 3 wine tour
Day 4 Avignon, L'Isle-sur-la-Sourge + Fountaine de Vaucluse
day 5 Village des Borie (quick stop), Gordes, Roussillion and Lourmarin
Day 6 Aix-Provence on route to Cassis x1 night

Well, Lourmarin is beautiful, but I suggest you play it by ear: if it is getting late by the time you feel done with Roussillon, then Ménerbes will make for a quicker stop, a short detour on the way back towards St Rémy.
Also, I would not waste my time in the tourist trap that is Fontaine de Vaucluse, unless it rained recently prior to your visit. The resurgence is sadly less and less reliably dramatic...
Otherwise, your plans look sound to me!

Patti, great choice staying in St Rémy! We did and absolutely loved it, we hated to leave. It was our favorite town of all in Provence.

I agree with the suggestion to do both the 30minute hike, spend plenty of time in Rousillon and skip Lourmarin if you run out of time. We loved staying in St Remy!

Thanks for the confirmation on our base in St Remy. Can't wait to see it! I've added more time for Roussillion and will make Lourmarin tentative. Appreciate the input.
