Roussillion Yes or No

I'm planning a trip to Europe for next year. It will include 3 1/2 days in Provence. We will be flying into Marseilles airport (mid day arrival) and renting a car. My current thinking is to start our stay in Provence by driving to Orange, see the Roman Theater and Arc de Triomphe and continue on to Gigondas for a couple of nights in the Cotes du Rhone area.

I've read about Roussillion which is apparently a very nice place to see but a little out of the way. I'm considering a daytime stop there for 2 or 3 hours for lunch and a little stroll while we are on our way to Gigondas. In your opinion, is Roussillion worth adding an extra hour to our drive that day for a three hour stop and lunch?

Thanks for your insights.

Tom.

I would say an enthusiastic yes!

We didn't drive there, but we visited Roussillon as part of a day trip from Avignon. I thought it was absolutely beautiful and would go back in a New York minute. We didn't eat there, but had a wonderful time in the little shops - I wish I had bought more truffle oil.

I’d also say yes. We had a car, stopped for a few hours walking around. Very nice we thought and well worth the time, which wasn’t much but fine for us.

We home based in Roussillon for a few days. We loved it. It is small but peaceful at night. Restaurant David is wonderful. One of the best meals I ever had. Definitely tour the ocher cliffs.

Is Marseille your landing point after an overnight transatlantic flight? If so, this sounds like way too much driving while jetlagged and probably sleep-deprived. I would be a terribly unsafe driver under those conditions.

can I add another "yes"? I was there once an hour before a big thunderstorm and the light on the colours for that hour were absolutely incredible. I still "wow" when I pull up those photos.

It is fabulous in normal full sun, it is great in shade, and incredible with sun pushing under heavy clouds. When running away from a thunderstorm, not so much. I was facing the wrong way, and not looking back. Kept the camera dry too (before I started using my iPhone).

We drove out of our way to have lunch in Roussillon heading to Nice from Jonquieres and it was totally worth it!

If you are intrigued by Roussillion , you might enjoy the book I listed below. It's set in Roussillion during WW Two. After reading it, I decided we had to visit the village.

Responding to acraven's concern about jet lag. It will not be a problem. We will be leaving the United States on June 25th and will be arriving in Marseilles (from Stockholm) on July 15th

We’re were just there a few weeks ago. Definitely worth the drive. Tour the ochre grounds right in town. Beautiful! Town is very nice as well.

We did Gordes and Rousspllon on the same day and really enjoyed both and the color in Roussillon is unlike any where we have been in France.
