Rousillion or st remy as a base?

Hello,

We are a young couple 32 years old.

We love dining at different restaurants
Drinking
Walking
Learning

We will have a hire car in late august.

We are staying 1 night in mouisters Saint Marie and then had planned to stay 4 nights in roussilion as our base. I am concerned now our prospective hotel (a beautiful room on property with breakfast included, pool, beautiful brick house) is 3km out from the city centre.

I am thinking maybe st remy would be a better base as we can also find somewhere that we can make our own platters and eat food on a balcony.

Would you choose 2 nights moustiers Saint Marie, 3 st remy?

Or 1 night Saint Marie, 4 st remy.

Or roussilion!

Thanks :)

I grew up in France and St Rémy-de-Provence is my favorite town in all of France. It’s extremely charming, fun shops, good outdoor market, lots of places to eat, fun to walk, small but not too small. We loved Roussillon but only for a few hours. way too small with few options. I haven’t been to Moustier-Sainte-Marie to compare.

Thank you Susan! Forgive my spelling it is moustiers sainte marie. Near the gorge.

Do you happen to know any information on fresh fruit and vegetable markets in St Remy? And any restaurants you’d recommend?

I’d recommend Rick Steves’ Provence guidebook, tons of really helpful info in there that will make your visit all the better. The famous St Rémy outdoor market doesn’t sell food, but i’d be surprised if they don’t have one. We weren’t there for that so i didn’t look for info on it. I can’t remember names of places we ate, we aren’t foodies, we just walk around looking at menus. I do know the café in the very center of town was great, we ate there many times. Best Croque Monsieur we’ve ever had, plus lots more great choices.

You didn’t ask but, we stayed at Hotel du Soleil and loved it.

Another bonus of St Rémy is that it’s super easy to drive in and out of and very conveniently located to visit lots of other towns and cities.

I agree with Susan about St. Remy as a base. They have a market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. I only went to the Wednesday market and if I remember correctly there was some food there.

St Remy de Provence is a great base. We spent 6 nights there in 2019, and then we spent 1 night in Moustiers-Sainte-Marie. I would have LOVED a second night in Moustiers-Sainte-Marie. We had time for the drive along the gorge, but we didn't have time to actually get down to the water and swim or rent a pedal boat. Is there any way you can swing 4 in St-Remy and 2 in M-S-M? I don't think I'd reduce St-Remy to just 3 nights--there is so much to do in that area.

Rousillon gets very crowded at times. It's gorgeous, but I don't think I would want to stay there--try to visit on a weekday. Edited to add that I see you would be outside the main town, which would be good. So it comes down to location and whether you want to be in a town or spend time at a beautiful property with a pool to relax. If you want to see a lot, I think St-Remy is ideal.

We based in St-Remy for 4 nights. Perfect location for visiting Pont du Gard, Avignon, Luberon villages, etc.
Really charming town with a fantastic market and lots of good restaurants.

We stayed at La Maison de Line- a quick walk to town, easy in and out for day trips, secure onsite parking, beautiful grounds. We were in one of the cottages with our own kitchen, washing machine, private patio. Fabulous. Didn't think we cared about the pool but were there during a heat wave so we used it almost every day.
Highly recommend.

Hello from Wisconsin,
St. Remy, lovely. Great farmers market. Good selection of restaurants. It is small but what a nice central square. Good enough location for getting to other locations. We rented a flat so we could buy at the farmers market and cook when we didn't eat out.
