Rouen for Armada in June

My family and I discovered that we will be travelling through Rouen at the time of the Armada event. Mostly we wondered why rooms were so expensive and figured this out, have always just planned one night there. At this point we are going to spend the morning at Foundation Monet in Giverny and then head to Rouen for the rest of the day and night. My question is this- should we stop outside the city and ditch our rental car, take a train into the city or should we attempt to drive into the city? How great are the fireworks, are we going to want to stay past that last train? This seems like a great opportunity, or a complete fiasco. I can't decide.

Thanks!

I drove in and out of Rouen last summer. Honestly, I could do without the car while there, and actually had to drive through a pedestrian area (legally) just to get to and from my hotel. I picked up my car in Paris, and ended up in Sainte-Mère-Église, so I needed a car on either end. But it was next to useless to me while actually in Rouen. I have no knowledge of the Armada or the fireworks.

The Rouen Armada is the largest gathering of tall ships in the world. This year there will be 45 I believe.
The last time it took place in 2019, there are a huge number of visitors (about 150 000 persons each day in 2019) who come to see this event which lasts 10 days with fireworks, concerts, parades in the streets (and on the water) and many other animations.

You were lucky to be able to book a room.
There will be road access closures to allow emergency services to circulate if necessary, so I strongly recommend that you check with your hotel, if it is in town, to find out how to get there and how to park your car.

And above all don't miss this event that you will surely never see again in your life.
