Romantic Parisian Bistro/restaurant

Hi Friends,

My wife and I , turned 60 this year; we are staying at hotel : voco Paris - Porte de Clichy. In October.

What restaurants do you like around this Porte area after a day of Paris sightseeing, Rick Steve’s style?

We declined the hotel breakfast; any nearby cafes you like?

Any sights worth seeing, not written up in Rick’s France book?

We will visit Monet’s Garden at Giverny. How best to take the train there?

What app helps with Paris Metro planning? Or just use Microsoft Bing maps?

Does the Senior Sncf “The Carte Avantage“ discount card apply to any public transportation or just taking train across France? That is, get any discounts on metro?

Merci,

pfagenp,
When will you be there? What month? For how long? Have you been to Paris before?

Here are some answers and suggestions where I might be able to help (big maybe!)
Haven't used Microsoft/Bing maps. Google maps are often mentioned as good ones for getting around the city. Try RATP for metro planning.

The train to Giverny leaves from the St. Lazare station. When you get off the train there is a bus for the last leg there.
Rick mentions all the big and good sights. If it's your first time here, go see lots of his recommendations. How long you have in Paris will affect any answers.

Often ignored is Cathedral of St. Denis, where the tombs of many French kings and queens are. It's a beautiful church with lots of historical meaning. Also, search out a concert. They are held sometimes at churches and Ste. Chappelle, of course. Or a performance at the Opera Garnier would really be great.

From Rick's book, yes to the Rodin Museum, the Cluny Museum, a boat ride on Vedettes de Pont Neuf, the Opera Garnier, the nearby Galeries Lafayette (the ceiling!), Ste. Chappelle, Notre Dame, strolling along the Seine (check out the bouquinistes if it is spring/summer). Of course the Louvre, Orsay and Orangerie, the view from Montmartre and inside the Sacre Coeur.

I don't know about the Carte d'Avantage, having never needed it.

I don't know any special fancy restaurants, but we had lunch at one of the Breizh Cafes...wonderful Breton savory crepes. There are a few around the city and reasonably priced. (When in Paris, we always stay at hubby's cousins' in the suburbs, so head there for dinner most nights...lucky us...she's a great cook! But those on the forum have some great recommendations.

Please come back with some info to help with suggestions.
Have a wonderful time in Paris!

Oops! I prefer to admire the Eiffel Tower from several locations (e.g. Champs de Mars, Trocadero) as opposed to ascending it. But yes, #1 sight in Paris!

Perhaps take the metro to Place de Clichy and dine at the famous Wepler's. It's fantastic and romantic.

P.S.
I believe Giverny closes after Ocrober for the winter. Check it out if you will be in Paris in wintertime. What are your dates?

Bonjour,

Merci for all Replies.

Our dates are October 7th-11th. We have visited Paris before. We will double check if Giverny is open on those dates.

Any sights worth seeing, not written up in Rick’s France book near the Porte de Clichy?

You've chosen a hotel that is just outside of Paris in the town of Clichy. I suspect most posters here are not familiar with restaurants and cafes in the area.

There are many different apps for directions. I like the Citymapper app. It will give you point to point instructions by walking, bus and metro. It will tell you what exit to take at the station, alert you that your stop is coming up and more.

Be very careful when searching directions. There is Porte de Clichy, 10 minute walk from your hotel, and Place de Clichy, more than a 30 minute walk to your hotel.

To find what's around your immediate area, I use Google Maps. I'm not familiar with Bing maps, but I would assume that would work also. Be very careful when searching for directions.

Trains for Giverny depart Paris from Gare Saint-Lazare. You can take Metro line 13 from Porte de Clichy to the train station. Here is a recent post on getting to Giverny from Paris.

Monet's Giverny is scheduled to be open in October. But as always when in France, double check for sudden work closures, strikes, whatever before setting out.

I find the "citymapper" app works great for the Paris Metro. It even tells you where to get on the train (what car) so you're close to the exit you want.

If you go into the city for breakfast look of one of the French Bastards bakeries.

To go to Giverny you take the train from Gare St. Lazare to Vernon. There isn’t a train station in Giverny. When you get out of the station turn to your right and there will be a shuttle bus to Giverny. If I recall correctly it was €5 last October. When you get dropped off in Giverny take note of the bus schedule to return to Vernon.
