If I park at L'Hospitalet and want to go down to the main restaurant street, Place De La Carretta, and am oldish and unable to walk very far, how can I descend? Many details would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Carol,
Instead of parking at l'Hospitalet, park in the car park for the château at the top of the hill. From there, you can take the furnicular down to the bottom.

If you park at the top, you can take the ascenseur incline (the funicular) down to the main restaurant street, round trip 4.20 euros. RS France 2016 covers this thoroughly (p 505).
