Requesting recommendations on a Road Trip through Brantome, Periguex, and Sarlet

Hi! We will be staying in Fonroque for a week and planning to spend time in Brantome, Periguex, and Sarlet. 5 adult women looking to sightsee and experience the culture and villages in September.

Are there recommendations for tours or sightseeing we can do on our own? What should be booked ahead vs. what can we organize once there? And restaurants, any recommendations and do we need reservations?

Thank you!!

Fonroque is located at the south west end of the Dordogne valley, the places to see and things to do are all located towards the East.

I made this map which should help you. Click on the items to see a description, a photo and possibly a website.

Fonroque being a little "out of the area" it is not mentioned as a place of interest. Search for it in the search box.

Be careful when typing place names. It's Sarlat and not Sarlet, and Perigueux and not Periguex.

I understood what places you are talking about, but a GPS will not understand, worse; it can take you very far from where you wanted to go!

You may want to experience a market day in Sarlat. The mid-week market (I think on Wed morning) is large. The one on Saturday is apparently even larger; I think it extends into the afternoon.

Unless the weather is dreadful, the town will be especially packed on those days. I'd recommend researching the parking situation ahead of time if you plan to visit on a market day. I imagine it is challenging.

A bit of Googling should turn up multiple websites listing market days in the various towns in the area. That's useful information to have, whether you want to go to as many markets as possible or avoid them. It can be difficult to fully appreciate the beauty of a town when some of its picturesque streets are packed with market stalls.

We are committed independent travelers, but there are some considerations that might make me opt for a guided day tour. I have a couple of pieces of advice on the tours vs independent sightseeing issue.

1: You have a number that will requre a larger vehicle than if you had 4. Don’t even think of trying to cram 5 of you into a car that is designated for 4.

2: Roads in the region are often narrow and twisty. For that reason, a 25 mile journey may require an hour of driving. Via Michelin and Google Maps are 2 sites that will give you routes and times. Add about 25% to their time estimates.

3: Try to scope out ahead of time the parking situation. It can be very limited. Spending your first half hour or more trying to find parking is not a good way to start the day.

We love the Dordogne - one of our favorite places in France - and have found wonderful things to see an do in every corner. Several lovely villages and sites are nearer to your lodging than Sarlat (which I personally find over-crowded and over-touristy) and I'd suggest that you check out -

Monpazier - one of the "beautiful" villages, a gorgeous medieval interior, great market and restaurants galore.
Carennac - lovely churches, quiet village
Bergerac - lovely old town, lots of boutiques/restaurants, small museums on wine, tobacco and the town. Nearby is The Chateau de Monbazillac famous for the golden sweet Monbazillac wines and is open for tastings
Belves - another "beautiful" village, with chateau , small museums, Saturday market and very cool 'troglodyte" dwellings under the main square.
Chateau de Biron - interesting chateau, with few vIsitors.
Chateau Bridoure - renovated castle with games and a labyrinth.

Chateau de Bonaguil - yes, another castle - I like them a lot - just above a small village with several cafes.

Whatever you do, have a wonderful time!!

Brantome is nice but quiet. I would not stay there for long. It's a little out of the way.

Sarlat la Caneda is very nice, but the market is really unpleasantly crowded, I preferred it on other days and night
Beynac, Castelnaud, and Le Roque le Gage are all very close by car, like 5 miles away from Sarlat, and very picturesque.
There are also many castles and chateaus within a 10 mile radius of Sarlat.
For example, there is Château des Milandes owned by the American singer Josephine Baker.
Belves is a Bastide which is stone village - which is interesting but not that pretty. Monpazier too is another kind of square stone village. There are a dozen other small places and none of them are lousy - they all are interesting in different ways.
There is also Les Eyzes with the 40,000 year old cave paintings.

Perigieux is a larger city with an interesting church that has a similar style to the one in Montmartre.

Carrenac is fairly far away closer to Rocamador and Les Collonges Rouge. It's a nice small place. Again there are many other small places nearby.

I also like Brive la Gaillard if you want a little bigger city like Perigieux but with better restaurants.

You can take trains to Perigeiux, Sarlat, Brive, but not many of the others.
