Board the bus using a credit card (tap to pay)

It is now (or soon to be) possible to purchase a bus ticket with you bank card (Visa/MC). The cost will be 2.50€, rather than the 2€ when using an Easy card or a configured smartphone, but will make traveling easier for many. Buses in Paris should already be equipped, those in service outside Paris will soon be equipped.

The métro/RER turnstiles will be similarity modified to accept bank cards but transition will not be completed for several years.

Hallelujah! That will be wonderful, especially when the metro adapts to it! Hopefully it won’t be too many years down the road. I thought I’d read that there was no plans to do this in Paris.

I prefer using the Navigo Easy card instead of the cc.

Lyon (TCL) has tap-to-pay too; no transit account needed. It’s available throughout zones 1 and 2, which cover the entire city. The trick is to use the red payment terminals on board, not the yellow ones. You can even pay for multiple passengers (up to 5) by repeatedly booping the same card or phone.

I am so glad they are finally offering this. It doesn't affect me since I have an annual Navigo pass. But it is great that people with a Navigo Easy with only metro rides loaded on it can now use their credit or debit card to take the damn bus !! Not having an option to buy tickets on the bus has been really frustrating for people.

Kim, thanks for pointing out the biggest advantage of buses now accepting credit cards.

Not having an option to buy tickets on the bus has been really frustrating for people.

The option to purchase tickets from the driver has been available for some time, either with cash or through SMS. What is new is that you can now purchase tickets when boarding using a bank card.

It seemed to me that visitors were rather unlikely to have the ability to buy those SMS tickets. And for a while, the ability to purchase in cash has gone the way of the dodo.

This sms service is only available to customers of Bouygues Telecom, Orange, SFR or Free operators.
It's NOT available for mobile virtual network operators (Bell, La Poste Mobile, CIC Mobile, Auchan Telecom, NRJ Mobile, Crédit Mutuel Mobile, etc.)
SMS ticket is NOT available to customers of a foreign operator.

During Covid, it was not possible to purchase bus tickets from the driver. Most of the time since then, as well as right now, you can purchase a ticket from the bus driver. The cost is 2.50€ exact change rather than 2€ for an electronic ticket.

SMS ticket is NOT available to customers of a foreign operator.

While this is true, if I were not to mention the SMS option, someone would certainly bring the omission to my attention. Plus, there are a few readers who live outside Paris, have subscriptions with established French carriers, and may not be aware of the option.
