Rhone Valley for 12 days in April - recommendations for places to base, and wine touring

Hi all;

My girlfriend and I plan three weeks in France in April. We are starting or ending in Paris for 3-4 days and plan on the rest in the Rhone Valley between Lyon and the coast. We are looking for suggestions on where to base for 2-3 days at a time. We love to walk and hike and are more interested in seeing small villiages and how people live than major sights. We are interested in unique experiences and as a wine maker, I'd like suggestions on wineries worth visiting. The Vienne Jazz fest is of note, any suggestions on managing that are welcome.

TIA;
Jack and Jane

Why don't you stay in Lyon? It has a train station that can take you anywhere and it is close to Rhone wineries.

We were also considering Vaison La Romaine, but I really loved Lyon.

Take the wine tours with http://www.lyon-oenotourisme.fr/fr/

It was well worth it.

I'd recommend either Nyons or Vaison la Romaine as places to stay. They're both wonderful small towns. Unlike Lyon, which is in the northern Rhone wine region, they're in the southern Rhone. While the wines in the north are very good, I find the towns and scenery far less interesting.
From Nyons or Vaison there are loads of wineries worth visiting. Among the ones we've visited recently are Domaine Coulange in Bourg St. Andeol, and Domaine le Goubert in Gigondas. You can read a little about them, and our trip to Nyons and other places, in my blog: http://mainelywinenews.blogspot.com/2017/05/more-provencal-villages-and-winery-visit.html
