I'd appreciate advice on where to return a car in the late afternoon/early evening in Nice. The train station would be more convenient to our hotel, but I suspect that returning is easier at the airport. We will be coming into Nice from the Gorges du Verdon. Thanks for your thoughts.

The airport and it's car rental locations are just off the Autoroute, very easy. There is an airport bus into central Nice which is not far away.

There can be quite a bit of weekday rush hour traffic at that hour, so please be warned. (That applies to either location). That particular stretch that leads down to the train station can get crowded.... however, what happens is that you actually take the same route but instead of heading to the airport you route/cloverloop through Voie Pierre Mathis. It's like a partially elevated small highway -- there is an exit near the Gare but there are certain surface streets you'll need to navigate to get to the main parking garage, where the rental car returns are located.
Note some major agencies also have some other in-town locations, close to the Promenade, like Hertz, Sixt, Avis and others. These are quite easy to find but do close earlier, like around 6pm.
